If you read serious paranormal case studies or journals that are passed amongst peers you will see that it has a very structured vocabulary. The writings assume the reader knows the application just like peer medial reports and medical terminology. This is my two cents on clarifying major paranormal terms that are often misused or misunderstood. This might save you some time in writing or detail descriptiveness if you do serious paranormal research and also aid your reading...i.e. for publication or consultation or even simply data sharing between groups that want to up their professional documentation.
Amorphous - Having no definite form or shape, spirits and ghosts often appears in mist-like forms or shapes.
Calling Ghost Phenomena - These are ghosts that call out the name of the living in order to get their attention. Audible AND "EVP clarity only".
Ghost Lights - Closely resembling orbs, but are much larger AND brighter (compare to Globule below) in appearance. If you have ever seen a ghost light ( like some of the ones documented in Joplin Missouri you know what I mean. (Research Joplin Spook Light)
Globule - A larger "Glob" resembling an orb. Glob doesn't seem to indicate detail but actually most "globules" are very detailed. The emphasis here is on size tho, not clarity and the name is slightly misleading.
Intelligent Haunting - Paranormal activity that takes place around a person or location that is caused by an intelligent or conscious spirit. The "intelligence here is defined as an entity that will respond to command or conversation. Such as "Are you hear?" and then a sign is given and repeatable. Most mediums are judged on their credibility by their ability to produce a sign from the departed soul attempting to be reached. One conclusion is that the medium is not able to make contact. Another one that can be given in paranormal research is that perhaps this soul is not willing or able to communicate via "intelligent haunting ". This same credibility is often misassigned to locations that are extremely active but simply do not have "intelligent haunting" phenomena. Which is to say it is not "on command."
Novel Haunting - Paranormal phenomena such as apparitions, unexplained sounds, smells or other sensations that are associated over a lengthy period of time with a specific location. This is not on command and is apparently random and undirected.
Inner Manifestation- Manifestation of paranormal activity experienced by a single person. Dizziness, fear, light headed, shortness of breath.
Outward Manifestation - The physical manifestation of paranormal activity. Anything someone besides "you" can experience. In paranormal documentation you will see that Outward Manifestation (Yes or No) is usually a pre-req for any group to investigate. A person getting short of breath or dizzy is not Outward Manifestation even if several people show these symptoms. BUT it isn't Inner Manifestation either. If several people experience physical symptoms it is called "Experiential Manifestations" and may become of interest to an investigative group.
Residual Haunting Phenomena- Believed to be a psychic imprint of a scene that keeps repeating itself. With this type of haunting no interaction with the ghost occur.
Vortex Phenomena- This is a swirling funnel shape when in motion. They can also appear long and narrow and having a tread like design. Some theorize this is a vehicle to transport spirits in the shape of orbs from their realm to ours.
I will post more soon. This should make you more conversational and help in understanding and writing Paranormal content for journals, papers and documentation.
Cheers,
Tobias |

Hag Phenomena and Shadow People
|
My name is Tobias and I am the founder of Blue Orb Ghost Tours and Savannah Paranormal. One of the most prevalent paranormal occurrences in Savannah, which as some may not know was bestowed the title of "Americas Most Haunted City" in 2002 by the American Institute of Parapsychology, is what is know in Savannah as "Hag Phenomena" and elsewhere as "The Shadow People."
This phenomena is important to give attention to by serious paranormal researchers because it is one of the few stories that is told frequently in both the white and the black cultures in Savannah. Typically each culture here has its own stories and folklore but not so with this one. This transcendence points to a credible phenomena regardless of its cause. It has become one of the chief focuses of our research group "Savannah Paranormal".
In the Gullah culture it is believed that root doctors have the power to conjure up and employ the services of dark figures from areas unknown to do the bidding of anyone willing to pay the root doctor for his services. These dark figures walk among us in the day looking very human and typically enter into the lives of those it is targeting as a new and friendly face that the victim will enjoy a strange instant chemistry with...a kindred spirit, if you will. This trust leads to psychic vulnerability and sets the victim up for the root doctors motives.
When night falls these "Hags" as they are called here in Savannah, shed their human skin, sometimes hiding it in the woods until morning according to Gullah legend. Once disembodied they seek out the victim and begin to torment them by standing menacingly at the end of the bed, smothering the victim, choking, scratching and biting them. Typically victims will wake up sensing the Hags presence and see the shadowy figure at the end of their bed. Other times they may wake up unable to move, scream or breathe and upon attempting to go back to sleep will be tormented with terrible nightmares and visions. This continues night after night even when the victim doesn't remember it according to Gullah root doctors until the victim falls into deep depression, anxiety states, suicidal tendencies and insanity. Sometimes the terror of the occurrences wears the victims body down and they eventually suffer heart failure, commit suicide or become insane. This cumulative assault on a victim is called being "Hag Ridden" or "Riding The Hag".
The phenomena is not just isolated to Gullah culture but colonial culture as well. Similar occurrences are documented frequently concerning dark figure attacks and even day sightings. The only difference being that colonial culture makes no such claim as to know the origins of these dark figures or anyone that may control theirs deeds. One story that recently came to the attention of Savannah Paranormal was of a man and his girlfriend touring the downtown area by River Street. Upon seeing one of the many tunnels we have here the girlfriend who was small enough to slip through the bars, decided to investigate. She took the camera and entered the tunnel while her boyfriend waited on a bench facing Bay Street and reading a book.
A few minutes later the man stated that he saw in the corner of his eye, his girlfriend peeking from behind a large live oak. He knew it was her because of the distinguishing bowler the girl had on her head and the pale blue scarf she wore around her neck. The man was reading and without making eye contact asked her if she had gotten scared and turned around. The man said he thought it odd that she continued to "play" with him by not answering and continuing to peek from behind the tree. The man said he then looked at his girlfriend and noticed a very strange smile on her face...it was very fake and seemed to melt as he stared at it. He then heard his girlfriend yell to him and as he turned he saw her squeezing through the tunnel bars. As he looked back at the form behind the tree it slid out of sight behind the tree like a snake and said the smile had become disfigured as if the entity had no mouth muscles to feel what it was portraying and having never "smiled" before could only mimic the emotion.
His girlfriend would tell us how pale and shaken the man was and it was several hours before he told her what had happened. He would later hear the story of the hag phenomena and was convinced that was what he had seen that day. Many tourists in the city detail to us similar stories not knowing about the Hags or the Shadows...only that something very real and very strange had happened to them.
