Dark tourist destinations in the news include the White River Monster, Spook Hill in Maryland, the Goatman, Bigfoot, ghostly images on museum's surveillance camera, the "haunted" swing, Moody's Light possibly debunked, and countless haunted hotels, restaurants, museums, theaters, campuses, and cemeteries.  That is not mentioning the local ghost tales and haunted walks around the world.  These articles appeared today in newspapers and magazines around the world and are featured here as a companion to our Dark Destinations.  As always, if you notice an article we missed, please send it to us using the link on the bottom of the page.  Oh, and Happy Halloween! In Search Of The White River Monster KAIT8 sent a journalist into the field and on to the White River of Arkansas to investigate and search for the legendary White River Monster believed to occupy its waters. Is Utah Pioneer Museum haunted? Deseret Morning News reports that a surveillance camera in Utah's Pioneer Memorial Museum in Salt Lake City has been picking up the ghostly face of a woman over a several night period and both the Utah Department of Public Safety and the Utah Highway Patrol have gone in to investigate.  One image of the "face" is displayed with the article. They fought. They died. They haunted. The Frederick News-Post has this article on the haunted Spook Hill outside Burkitsville, Maryland, the site of a Civil War battle, as well as other Civil War ghosts and other assorted characters in the Frederick County, Maryland. Ghost Shuts Off Live Camera On Halloween NewsNet5.com installed a web cam in the reportedly haunted Full Spectrum Art Studio in Burton, Ohio earlier this month so users could watch for the ghost.  Since then, the building and even the camera have experienced all sorts of problems. In search of the goat man myth Diamondback Online looks into the legend of a mysterious creature known as the Goatman, said to wander the woods of Prince George's County, Maryland. Bigfoot in Clermont County? The Enquirer takes a look at the reports of sightings of a Sasquatch-like creature in the Clermont County area of Ohio. UFOs invade Democratic presidential debate The Los Angeles Times reports that presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich confirmed recent reports that he saw an unidentified flying object some time ago in the state of Washington. Spooky places: 10 trips for twisted travelers Palm Beach Post has this listing of creepy locales worldwide for the venturous tourist.  Sites include the Hotel Pera Palace in Istanbul, Luxor, Egypt, The Conciergerie in Paris, and many more. "Haunted" swing won't stop rocking LIVENEWS.com.au has picked up on the story of the swing that seems to go on its own in the city of Firmat, Argentina that has baffled scientists.  This report even includes some video of the swing in action. RIP: Local legend laid to rest The Rensselaer Republican reports that members of a local ghost hunting group believe they have debunked the mysterious Moody's Light on Meridian Road in Rensselaer, Indiana. The Ghost Hunters A reporter for the Glasgow Daily Record takes part in a paranormal investigation of the ironically haunted Edinburgh Dungeon in Edinburgh, Scotland. Truly haunted shop The Daily Iowan documents the rumored haunting of the Haunted Bookshop of Iowa City, Iowa. Search on for paranormal at Davenport museum Radio Iowa reports that local paranormal investigators are currently investigating claims of paranormal activity at the Putnam Museum in Davenport, Iowa. Gallows Hill home called most haunted WWAY NewsChannel 3 has filed this report on a reportedly haunted home in Wilmington, North Carolina on land that was once home to public executions and is known as Gallows Hill. Eerie Haunted Hotel Stories Hotel Interactive, Inc. has this listing of reportedly haunted hotels around the United States. Haunted ski resorts MSNBC tracks the various ski resorts in the United States and Canada that are rumored to have more than a few ghostly guests. Green Park Inn's lady in white Go Blue Ridge details the haunting of Green Park Inn in Blowing Rock, North Carolina and its resident ghost, Laurel Greene. Reporter haunted by stay in historic Jefferson hotel A reporter from the Longview News Journal has these stories to tell about her stay at the allegedly haunted Jefferson Hotel in Jefferson, Texas. Jen's Haunted Halloween! OK! Magazine has this article on the Heathman Hotel in Portland, Oregon (apparently because Jennifer Aniston has been staying there recently), where all the rooms ending with the numbers "03" are haunted (especially 703) in one fashion or another. Sisters explore hauntingly familiar tales Grand Traverse Herald has this report on a recent investigation of paranormal activity at the Bowers Harbor Inn in Traverse City, Michigan. Haunted hotel in Connecticut? WTNH has filed this report on the Lighthouse Inn in New London, Connecticut that is home to paranormal activity. Ghost Hunters Search Historic Hotel WOWK goes ghost hunting with a local paranormal group to investigate claims of ghostly activity at the Elk Hotel in Sutton, West Virginia. The lady vanishes The Boston Globe reports on the "Mischievous Lady," as she has been dubbed, that is believed to haunt the Beechwood Inn in Barnstable, Massachusetts. Housekeeper experiences paranormal activity at Billings hotel KPAX-TV explores claims of paranormal activity at the Dude Rancher Lodge in Billings, Montana. Don CeSar haunted? Tampa Bay's 10 has filed this report on the reported haunting of the Don CeSar hotel in St. Pete Beach, Florida. Mitchell house draws ghost hunters, Sci Fi Channel movie Indiana Daily Student has this write-up on the reportedly haunted bed and breakfast, the Whispers Estate in Mitchell, Indiana, which is reportedly home to a spirit named Rachel and will be featured on the upcoming Children of the Grave documentary on the Sci-Fi Channel. Ghoul hunt at Horton Mansion on TV today An article from the New Jersey Herald details the history and a recent paranormal investigation of the historic Horton Mansion in Newton, New Jersey, which will be featured on a local program tonight. Vishnu Springs: Is the old place haunted? Western Courier has this write-up on the strange goings-on in the ghost town of Vishnu Springs, Illinois. Secretary of spooks? An article from the Rutland Herald details the ghostly presence (believed to be former resident Ruth Burgess) that occupies an old building in Montpelier, Vermont that now houses the Vermont Secretary of State's office. Camera captures creepy sights at cemetery The Nashua Telegraph documents some odd photos taken at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Hollis, Ohio - long rumored to be haunted and even known as Blood Cemetery. On Dining: Hungry for a good scare? Try these haunts Seattle Post Intelligencer takes a look at the reportedly haunted restaurants of Seattle, Washington; including Kell's, the Deluxe Bar and Grill, and the College Inn Pub. Pubs haunted by ghostly goings-on Bradford Telegraph Argus has this article on the reports of hauntings at the English pubs, Dog and Gun in Oxenhope and Hare and Hounds in Wibsey, which were documented in the new book Haunted Bradford by Andy Owens. Haunted restaurant? The County Press explores the accounts of ghostly activity at the Castaways Restaurant in Elba Township, Michigan. Spirits haunt South Sound places The Olympian goes after the tales and legends of hauntings in the theaters that make up the South Sound area of Washington. Royal Oak theater may be part of Metro Detroit's haunted history The Detroit News details the alleged hauntings of the Baldwin Theatre in Royal Oak, Michigan, and gives a quick list to other haunted theaters around Detroit. The legend of Chappie Kawartha Media Group features the ghost of "Chappie" believed to haunt the Peterborough Theatre Guild in the Ontario province of Canada. Theater ghost lives on StateHornet.com details the haunting of Sacramento State's University Theatre in Sacramento, California. Lake Worth Playhouse haunted? WPTV has filed this report on the Lake Worth Playhouse in Lake Worth Florida, which has long been rumored to be haunted. A spirited performance The State has this write-up on the ghostly going-ons at the Longstreet Theatre on the campus of the University of South Carolina in Columbia. A Central Illinois Ghost Story WCIA-3 News reports on the claims of paranormal activity at the Avon Theater in Decatur, Illinois. Politics and Poltergeists: Hauntings on the Hill ABC News details the haunts, legends, and ghost stories of Washington D.C., including the White House and the U.S. Capitol Building. 5 haunted spots in California The Los Angeles Times has this list of their top five haunted spots in California.  Sites include theWinchester Mystery House, the Queen Mary, Alcatraz National Park, and more. Check out these local haunts to scare up some fun Los Angeles Daily News has gotten in on the fun as well and provided their own list, which also includes the Queen Mary, along with Hollywood Forever Cemetery and more. Phantoms populate Peninsula The Monterey County Herald focuses in on the Peninsula of California for their haunted tales, as well as looks at the new book Ghosts and Mystery: Along Old Monterey's Path of History by Randall Reinstedt. Show-Me scary: Author hits the haunts of some of Missouri's otherworldly residents The Kansas City Star visits with author Jason Offutt, author of Haunted Missouri: A Ghostly Guide to the Show-Me State's Most Spirited Spots, and hears the tales of ghosts around the state of Missouri, including the Hotel Savoy, the Lemp Mansion, and more. Haunting happenings? Strange things said to occur at local sites An article from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports on the spirits that haunt Saint Louis County, Missouri.
