Today marks the birthday of horror icon Angus Scrimm. Best known for his portrayal of the Tall Man in the horror series, Phantasm, Scrimm was born on August 19, 1926. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Scrimm several years back when we were both panelists at a Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors. Despite having just endured a marathon-length autograph session, he took the time to stop and chat for a bit, as well as posed for a few photos. He was truly a gracious and kind soul and I wish him the best on his birthday.
What better way to celebrate the birthday of the Tall Man himself then to take a visit to the estate that doubled as the exterior of the Morningside Mausoleum in the original Phantasm, Dunsmuir House & Gardens in Oakland, California? If that horror connection is not enough, it also served as the house that rejuvenated itself by killing off its occupants in the 1976 horror film, Burnt Offerings. It was also featured prominently in the closing moments of the Mike Myers comedy, So I Married an Axe Murderer.
Make some offerings at Morningside.
