Scarecrow Hollow
When it comes to Halloween haunted attractions, sometimes the ambience of the location that is hosting the event can add greatly to the overall effect. Such is the case with Scarecrow Hollow, which has the distinction of being one of the few haunts around to be set in an actual former-funeral home. Every Halloween season, the old Kessling Funeral Home in Mobridge, South Dakota is transformed into a full-fledged haunted house and causes nightmares in its guests that come as far away as Aberdeen in-state and Bismarck, North Dakota out-of-state.
The haunt got its start back in 2003 and was dreamed up by creator Michael Oatman, with co-founders Dawn Konold and Mike Haas. The attraction is a non-profit event that collects food for local charities and has been known to hold other events, such as coffin races back in 2006. At least 55 people work the haunt each night and providing the chills, alongside all sorts of animatronics, special effects, and sound effects. Scarecrow Hollow has quickly gained notoriety in the area and attracts around 1,500 visitors each year.
The Attraction
The theme of Scarecrow Hollow is adjusted each season to offer something new to returning guests. In the past, the haunt has adopted the themes of Cinematic Nightmares, Halls of Terror, and Mortuary of Madness in 2008 - playing off the history of the very location itself. It is composed of 18 different rooms and typically takes an average of 20 minutes to tour the haunt.
