The Tower Building and Arsenal
After Arkansas became a state in 1836, an Arsenal of barracks, armory, and quarters were built in this 36-acre location to house soldiers, supplies and weapons. In 1840, the Tower Building was built with three-feet thick exterior walls as a munitions warehouse and it is the only remaining structure of the original Arsenal to date.
The Civil War
The Confederate Army used the Arsenal after Arkansas's secession from the Union in May of 1861. They held it for two years and used it to repair small arms and manufacture gunpowder, until September 11, 1863 when the Union would take Little Rock. The Armory was also used to incarcerate one of the most well known Arkansas Civil War figures, seventeen-year-old David Dodd. A memorial marking the spot of his nightmarish execution is across the street from the east side of the Armory.
Human Dissection Obelisk
Directly behind the building stands a rather odd obelisk commemorating the first human dissection to take place in Arkansas in November 1874. The Arkansas Medical Society erected it on May 12, 1927 to "perpetuate the early history of medicine in the state..."
General Douglas MacArthur
On January 26, 1880, Douglas MacArthur was born in this very Armory while his father, Captain Arthur MacArthur was stationed here. Today the Tower Building is the home to the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military Museum named in his honor.
Hauntings
The Tower Building has long since believed to be haunted. Staff and visitors have reported hearing voices and music that seem to come out of nowhere, shadows, apparitions, and various other paranormal experiences. The Armory is located in the historic Quapaw Quarter of Little Rock and there are reports of ghosts and hauntings in several of the houses nearby.
Murder Mystery Dinner Theater
Little Rock Tours offers a murder mystery dinner inside of the Tower Building. They give a tour and tell the various ghost stories and history of the Tower with the added twist of a "murder" taking place right in front of you that you need to solve. Information can be found at the site below. |
