Chateau Marmont
Hollywood hides so many dark secrets behind its glamorous facade that unhappy spirits often linger after death. Murder, torture, suicide; shocking crimes among the rich and beautiful. Tucked here against a steep hill and hidden behind tall trees is one of the most glamorous, and haunted, hotels in the United States. The ghosts of Howard Hughes, Marilyn Monroe, Boris Karloff and Jim Morrison have all made an appearance. There are even rumors of a curse, as some of its guests have gone on to meet terrible deaths after staying there.
The Chateau Marmont is haunted by tragedy and scandal. Sharon Tate spent an idyllic few weeks as a newlywed here with Roman Polanski. Not long after leaving the Chateau, the 8-months-pregnant actress was stabbed to death at the hands of Manson Family members. Natalie Wood, who drowned in 1981, was rumored to have carried on an affair when she was only 17 with 44-year-old Nicholas Ray, her director in Rebel Without A Cause. It was while spending the night with Ray in one of the Chateau's bungalows that Wood was visited with the first of many premonitions she would have throughout her life that she would die in the water.
The Death of John Belushi
Its most famous scandal is the death of John Belushi, who overdosed here on March 4, 1982 after consuming massive quantities of liquor and cocaine. The next morning his personal trainer found the body with "the tongue sticking out of his mouth and a horrid discoloration of his body on one side where all of his blood had settled." John Belushi was only 33 when he died. His drug dealer, Cathy Smith, was convicted of his murder and spent 18 months behind bars.
Visiting the Chateau Marmont and the Bar Monmont
The hotel is not open to the public. You can only see it if you book a room, with rates starting at $370. There is a bar down the street from the hotel called Bar Marmont that is open to the public. Bar Marmont is recommended to anyone visiting Los Angeles. A gorgeous, dimly lit bar with patio. Upscale food and drink menu. Great place to people watch where you might see a few movie stars. Sandra Bullock says it's her favorite hotel: "It has an incredibly seductive atmosphere. No wonder people come here to have affairs - it's got that air of history, where you know a lot of people did things they weren't supposed to do."
