Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site
Edgar Allan Poe lived at this location in Philadelphia from 1843 until 1844. The house he lived in is part of the tour as are two other buildings that feature exhibits and audiovisual displays about Poe. The original house stands unfurnished and eerily empty, waiting for visitors.
This is the only home in Philadelphia in which Poe lived that still exists. It was during the years he lived in Philly that Poe wrote many of his famous short stories. Stories written while living in the City of Brotherly Love include The Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Black Cat, The Pit and the Pendulum and many others. Some suspect that Poe's poem The Raven may have been started while living at this particular home.
