Information
Port Angeles, Washington
The area that would become Port Angeles, Washington was discovered by Spanish naval officer and explorer Francisco de Eliza in 1791 while he ventured about the Northwest coast of the North American continent. He named the harbor Puerto de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (Port of Our Lady of the Angels). The name was gradually shortened to Port Angeles by those who settled there over the decades that followed. The port quickly became a successful place for trade and commerce by ship, being incorporated officially into a city in 1890.
Port Angeles benefits from the nearby presence of the Olympic Mountains, which shields the city from the large amounts of rain that regularly saturate other communities in that Northwestern region. Its proximity to the mountains also helped to make it a natural choice for the headquarters of the Olympic National Park (established in 1938).
The city is also known for being the former home of Bigfoot researcher Grover Krantz and for its use as a setting in Stephenie Myer's
Twilight
series of novels.
Grover Krantz
Physical anthropologist Grover Sanders Krantz (born November 5, 1931) spent the latter portion of his life living in Port Angeles. Krantz, who was a professor at Washington State University from 1968 until 1998, was largely known for his belief in the cryptid known as Bigfoot. Initially skeptical of Bigfoot claims, Professor Krantz began to believe in the creature, also known as Sasquatch, after examining casts made of large footprints discovered on November 24, 1969 near the community garbage dump in Bossburg, Washington. Known as the "
Cripple Foot
" tracks, the casts suggested a creature with one deformed foot. Throughout the remainder of his career, Krantz continued to research and theorize on the existence of Bigfoot creatures, writing both academic papers and books on the subject.
Grover Krantz passed away from pancreatic cancer on February 14, 2002 in his Port Angeles home. As per his wishes, his body was initially donated for research at the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, also known under the nickname the Body Farm (see
The Body Farm, Knoxville, Tennessee
). After his corpse was used in the studies of decay in Tennessee, Krantz's skeleton was given to the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. For a few years, his bones rested in storage with those of three of his deceased Irish Wolfhounds. Krantz's skeleton along with those of his favorite dog, Clyde, were brought out of storage and used for the temporary Smithsonian exhibit
Written in Bone: Forensic Files of the 17th Century Chesapeake
. A museum taxidermist assembled the skeletons together, recreating the pose from a photo of Grover and Clyde together in life.
The Twilight Saga
Port Angeles turns up as a setting in the fictional
Twilight
novels by Stephenie Meyer due to the city's proximity to the novels' primary setting of Forks, Washington (see
Forks, Washington
). Fans of the series have adopted spots in the city as representations of places that Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, Jacob Black and other
Twilight
characters visit during the course of the novels. For its part, the city and its businesses have largely embraced the tourism that the books have brought into the area and have hosted events that cater to the Twilight fans.
Early in the novel
Twilight
, main character Bella Swan takes a plane from Phoenix, Arizona (see
Sky Harbor International Airport
) and lands in Port Angeles, Washington (see
William R. Fairchild International Airport
) where she meets up with her father and drives to her new home in Forks.
Bella later accompanies her new friends Jessica Stanley and Angela Weber to Port Angeles, on their quest to find dresses for prom. While there, Bella makes a side trip to a book store, looking for a book on Quileute legends. After leaving the bookstore, Bella intends to reunite with her friends for dinner, but takes a wrong turn and ends up in a dark alley, being pursued by some men with dark intentions. As they close in on her, Edward suddenly appears and rescues Bella, frightening away the men in the process. The two drive to La Bella Italia and Edward buys Bella dinner. It is during their dinner together, that Edward reveals his ability to hear other people's thoughts.
While there isn't a La Bella Italia restaurant in real life, there is a Bella Italia restaurant (see
Twilight Saga: Bella Italia
) which may have been the basis for the fictional restaurant in the book. Not far away are a clothing store (see
Twilight Saga: Gottschalks
) and a bookstore (see
Twilight Saga: Port Book and News
) that have been selected by
Twilight
fans as being good approximations of the other businesses that Bella visited in that first book.
In the second
Twilight Saga
novel,
New Moon
, Bella returns to Port Angeles with Jessica to see a fictional zombie movie called
Dead End
. Following the movie, Bella and Jessica intend to walk to a nearby McDonald's restaurant, but stop when Bella thinks she sees the men who intended to assault her the night Edward saved her in Port Angeles. While Bella gets a closer look at the men as they stand outside of a bar called One-Eyed Pete's, she further sours her already damaged friendship with Jessica and imagines she hears the voice of Edward warning her away from the men. The incident leads Bella into a string of risk-taking moments, in a self-destructive attempt to keep the memory of Edward close. It ultimately leads to her nearly drowning during a solo cliff-diving stunt in La Push (see
La Push, Washington
).
Bella returns to the movie theater in Port Angeles (see
Twilight Saga: Lincoln Theatre
) once more in
New Moon
; this time with Jacob Black and Mike Newton. What was meant to be a large group of friends going to the movies, dwindles and ends up as an awkward threesome with Jacob and Mike both interested in Bella romantically. The night ends early when Mike becomes ill. It is the final time that Bella sees Jacob Black as a human.
Twilight Events in Port Angeles
The city of Port Angeles has caught on to the potential for
Twilight Saga
-based tourism and has had a few events in recent years to celebrate the popularity of the books and movies. On November 21, 2008, for the release of the
Twilight
movie, the Lincoln Theatre ran a red carpet from their door to Bella Italia, so that fans catching dinner and movie would have the red carpet treatment.
For the release of
New Moon
a year later on November 19, 2009, Port Angeles greatly expanded on the activities, holding a number of events throughout the weekend. Events included a vampire belly dancing performance, a dog show (in honor of the werewolves presumably), wine tastings (including wines named for the
Twilight
series), a "
Find Victoria
" scavenger hunt, Quiluete storytelling and culture, a fashion show and a Gothic ball.
Port Angeles has also gotten involved with the celebration of Stephenie Meyer Day, a series of events that takes place in Forks and Port Angeles during a weekend close to September 13 (the fictional birthday of Bella Swan). Events during Stephenie Meyer Day in the past have included trivia contests, a CPR class (in honor of Jacob saving Bella from drowning in La Push), Quiluete storytelling, musical performances and a ball. They've also held "
Twilight-style
" weddings.
Visiting Port Angeles
Being a harbor city and featuring less rainy weather than other nearby areas, opens up the potential for boating and other aspects of vacationing along the coast. As mentioned earlier, Twilight fans will find themselves welcomed by the local businesses for the revenue they bring into the local economy. If you plan a trip to Port Angeles and Forks, you may want to check their chamber of commerce Web sites below for any possible upcoming
