Port Book & News
The Port Book & News is a bookstore in Port Angeles, Washington (see Port Angeles, Washington). It deals in new and used books, greeting cards, and other associated items. The store regularly has authors make appearances there for readings and signings.
Twilight
In Stephenie Meyer's novel Twilight the main character has a tense moment near a book store. Bella Swan walks from a department store to a nearby book store to shop. She changes her mind upon seeing that the store has a New Age appearance and goes looking for a 'normal' bookstore. She wanders a bit and then finds herself lost and wandering around dark alleyways. A group of four men begin to follow Bella and she very nearly becomes the victim of a mugging or worse. She is saved by Edward Cullen, who is a vampire. Afterward, he takes her to the La Bella Italia restaurant, which was likely based on the nearby Bella Italia italian restaurant (see Twilight Saga: Bella Italia restaurant). While Port Book and News doesn't fit the New Age appearance of the bookstore described in the book, its location near the Gottschalks department store (see Twilight Saga: Gottschalks) and Bella Italia make it likely inspiration, or at least the best choice for a real-life stand-in for the store in the book.
Movie Adaptation
A scene including a bookstore was included in the 2008 film adaptation of Twilight by director Catherine Hardwicke with some slight changes. In the movie version, the character of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) actually goes into the Port Angeles bookstore to purchase a book on the Quileute tribe of the Pacific Northwest after doing some research on the Internet. The store is known as Thunderbird and Whale (see Twilight (2008): Thunderbird and Whale in Movie Locations) instead of Port Book and News for, more than likely, naming rights concerns. The actual building used is the office of a local attorney in Saint Helens, Oregon that was converted for exterior sequences of the bookstore. Though the books are set in and around the Washington cities of Forks (see Forks, Washington) and Port Angeles, the actual filming took place primarily in the Oregon cities of Saint Helens and Portland. |
