Vampires of New England
Buried in this cemetery are the remains of Mercy Brown and her family. Tuberculosis outbreaks were once blamed on vampirism in old New England. It was believed that those who died from tuberculosis had actually been victims of vampires and would themselves return to feed on family members. The Brown family had already lost two members to tuberculosis when two more were stricken, Mercy and her Brother Edwin.
Mercy Brown passed away in the winter at the age of nineteen. Mercy's body was placed in a crypt for temporary storage until the ground would thaw enough to allow for burial. A time later her Father, desperate to save the rest of his family, and a small mob of locals unearthed Mercy's Mother and Sister who had died years earlier. They were decayed and therefore determined not to be vampires.
Mercy, however, was found to be relatively fresh looking upon the opening of her crypt. Her corpse was examined by one Doctor Metcalf who removed her heart and possibly some other organs. He found them to still drip blood. This was all determined to be evidence of Mercy being a vampire. Her heart was removed from the crypt and burned on a nearby stone wall. The ashes from her burned heart were mixed into an elixer and given to her ill Brother, Edwin...who died anyway.
What remained of Mercy Brown was finally buried in the ground.
Bram Stoker & H.P. Lovecraft
Author H.P. Lovecraft mentioned Mercy Brown in his tale The Shunned House. There is also evidence that Dracula author Bram Stoker may have taken inspiration from the Mercy Brown incident to create his famous vampire novel.
Supernatural
There are claims of spirit lights seen floating about this cemetery at night. |
