The city was the site of two Civil War battles, the second of which was devastating to the Confederate Army. Though the Union Army actually withdrew and thus was a "victory" for the south, they took heavy casualties that decimated the ranks of the Army of Tennessee. In total, 1,750 Confederate troops were killed and more than 3,800 wounded. On the other side, the Union Army lost 189 men, 1,033 were wounded and around 1,104 went missing. The first fifteen minutes of the battle were considered the bloodiest fifteen minutes in United States history.
Haunted Franklin
The company Franklin on Foot specializes in walking tours of historic Franklin, Tennessee. Their main ghost tour is Haunted Franklin, which is a ninety minute walk through downtown Franklin. Ghosts and Gore Tour
The company also offers the Ghosts and Gore Tour, which combines the ghostly history of the city with that of some of its more infamous crimes. The crimes of Franklin include everything from prostitution, rape, murder, abortion, bootlegging and contract killings. It runs about ninety minutes and also covers six city blocks. Historic Carnton Plantation Ghost Tour
Franklin on Foot also offers a nightly tour of the Historic Carnton Plantation, which is known as "the most haunted building in Tennessee." Tour guides will lead their groups through the house by candlelight and tell the story of the multiple spirits that reside there.
