Information
Shocktoberfest
Shocktoberfest is an annual Halloween event in Sinking Spring, Pennsylvania (near Reading, PA). The event's origin came from a haunted hayride called the Field of Screams that was held in 1989. The hayride was a success, but had to change its name after it was discovered that there was already a haunted attraction called Field of Screams only 30 miles away in Lancaster. Changing the name to Shocktoberfest, the hayride returned in 1990 with the addition of the Toxic Asylum, a haunted house with a hospital theme. Further haunted houses with varying themes and a midway were added over the years since.

Biohazard Hayride
The hayride at Shocktoberfest covers 30 acres of land. The theme for the ride is a fictional abandoned industrial park called Willow Glen. The hayride takes riders on a journey through the crumbling facility, braving the mutated horrors that lurk within.

Toxic Asylum
The Toxic Asylum is the oldest haunted house in the Shocktoberfest park. The attraction is themed as an old mental hospital that was shutdown years ago. Despite its closure the insane patients and cruel staff still lurk the halls, unable to leave. The Toxic Asylum takes advantage of Chromadepth technology to render the house in 3D for those who dare to enter.

Prison of the Dead
This 50,000 square foot haunted house uses the fictional Willow Glen State Penitentiary as its setting. The haunt's story is that the prison's warden, Mr. Chivron, mass-murdered the inmates and killed himself rather than allowing the state to shut his prison down. Visitors are given the opportunity to wander the haunted prison.

The Monster Midway and Club Shock
Shocktoberfest also provides a carnival-style midway, complete with concessions, games, a freakshow and scare zones featuring wandering actors and visitor-controlled animatronics (see below). The park also has a disc jockey spinning tunes in the Club Shock dance club.

Text2Scream & iScareYou
In recent years, the Shocktoberfest scare park has utilized cellphone technology to add a further level of interactivity for visitors with their Text2Scream and iScareYou applications for cellphones and iPhones. The technology allows phone users to activate animatronic monsters hidden around the park, giving them the power to anonymously scare other visitors to the park. Text2Scream also allows users to interact further in the Shocktoberfest's Club Shock, providing them with the ability to play games, flash messages on screens and remotely send music requests to the club's disc jockey.

Visiting Shocktoberfest
The Shocktoberfest haunted theme park regularly adds new attractions and changes out old ones with each new season. For the most up-to-date information, people intending to visit the park should visit Shocktoberfest's Web site (see Related Sites). Visitors should also bring their cellphones to take full advantage of the park's interactivity. The park can be found just a few doors down from the Graffius Burial Vault Company, which unfortunately is not open to the public.
