Twilight (2008): Forks Police Station
This bank in Vernonia, Oregon got the silver screen treatment when it appeared in the 2008 vampire/fantasy movie, Twilight. The movie was an adaptation of the first book in a popular, bestselling series of novels by author Stephenie Meyer that have sold millions of copies worldwide, while amassing a huge following. Though the books take place in the very-real Washington cities of Forks, La Push, and Port Angeles (see Forks, Washington and La Push, Washington under Literary Sites), the production company behind the movie opted to have various locations throughout northern Oregon fill in due to incentives offered by the state. The city of Vernonia was chosen as the feature film version of the primary city of Forks.
Though Vernonia was transformed into Forks (a "Welcome to Forks" sign was added on the outskirts and buildings throughout Vernonia displayed signs that advertised themselves as the Washington city) for driving scenes, this was the only location to feature specific action. In Twilight, the bank was transformed into the Forks Police Station (see Twilight Saga: Forks Police Station under Literary Sites), where Charlie Swan (Billy Burke), the father of the main character Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), works. It is featured in the sequence where Edward (Robert Pattinson) is driving Bella back from Port Angeles, only to find both Charlie and Edward's father, Dr. Carlisle Cullen (Peter Facinelli), at the station. They are investigating the death of Charlie's friend Waylon Forge (Ned Bellamy), whose body was found in a boat near the marina where he was attacked (see Twilight (2008): Kadow's Marina). While the authorities chalk it up to a wild animal attack, both Edward and Carlisle know it was probably the work of vampires.
The Twilight filmmakers were limited with locations in Vernonia due to the fact that the city was still recovering from the major flood of December 2007 that had submerged most of the town underwater. Most of the structures inside the town were still heavily damaged by the floodwaters. Partly due to this (and for other location scouting reasons), other Forks locations were filmed elsewhere. These included the Swan's house (see Twilight (2008): The Swan House) in nearby Saint Helens, the Cullen's house (see Twilight (2008): The Cullen House) in Portland, The Carver Café in Damascus (see Twilight (2008): The Carver Cafe), and Forks High School, for which exteriors were shot at Kalama High School in Washington (see Twilight (2008): Kalama High School), while interiors were primarily shot at Madison High School in Portland (see Madison High School, Portland, OR). This particular building sat high enough that it escaped the flood damage and was deemed perfect to fill in for the police station. It was used for both the interior and exterior shots of the police station in the film and production took place here on April 25, 2008.
The Location
While it may have been in a police station in the film, the building is actually home to the Vernonia-branch of the Wauna Federal Credit Union and was simply altered for the production. It remains an active business and continues to serve patrons to this day. Any visits to the location should be restricted to outside the facility. As always, visitors are expected to respect the company and their customers. |
