The Viper Room and the Death of River Phoenix
The Viper Room is a nightclub that was co-owned by actor/musician Johnny Depp from 1993 until 2004. The club is infamously associated with the death of young actor River Phoenix. Phoenix died of an overdose of heroin and cocaine on the sidewalk after just exiting the club on Halloween the very year the nightclub opened. Up until the change of ownership in 2004, The Viper Room would close down on Halloween in memory of River Phoenix. Since 2004, despite the club being open on Halloween, fans of River Phoenix gather outside the nightclub and leave tributes to his memory.
River Phoenix was one of four main cast members in Stand by Me the screen adaption of Stephen King's short novel The Body.
