Information
Blue Heron Paper Company
This location in Oregon City, Oregon has been home to industrial activity since the 1930s, but it has also played a role in a couple recent films that were shot here. Located alongside the Willamette Falls, the plot of property has been home to various plants and mills over time. Before that, the area was filled with villages of Native American tribes that believed the falls were the gift of a great god so that the people had enough food for the winter. After fur traders and westward-bound pioneers moved into the area, it was developed to house flour mills, woolen mills, paper mills, and even a hydro-electric plant.

The origins of the Blue Heron Paper Company began on March 12, 1909 when the Hawley Pulp and Paper Company produced its first paper from the mill. At the time, the mill produced 20 tons of paper per day. After several changes in ownership, the plant was re-dubbed the Blue Heron Paper Company in 2000, which today processes over 500 tons of scrap paper per day; making it one of the largest recyclers in the state of Oregon. In recent years, it has also been the site of a couple of major Hollywood movie productions as well.

The Hunted (2003)
Production on the film, The Hunted, took place at the Blue Heron Paper Company in 2001. The movie was directed by William Friedkin (The Exorcist) and stars actor Tommy Lee Jones as an ex-Special Forces officer who is recruited to track down a former pupil, played by Benicio del Toro, who is using his survivalist training to stalk and kill local hunters. The industrial site was utilized to stage an action-based chase and gunfight, using local actors in the area as extras.

Twilight (2008)
In 2008, the industrial site made an appearance in the film adaptation of the bestselling novel, Twilight, by author Stephenie Meyer. The dark fantasy stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson and is directed by Catherine Hardwicke. The story concerns a teenage girl that moves to a new city and falls in love with a century-old vampire. Though the book series actually takes place in the area around Forks, Washington (see Forks, Washington under Literary Sites), the filmmakers opted to shoot the adaptation in northern Oregon around the cities of Portland, Oregon City, and Saint Helens. Filming in Oregon City took place in April 2008 and the scene featuring the Blue Heron Paper Company involves several vampires attacking and killing a night watchman.

The Location Today
The location continues to serve as a local paper mill and the area is closed to the general public. The closest any tourists can get to the actual movie sets is by parking their cars nearby and looking in at the property from the public streets. As always, please be respectful of the company and their employees.
