The Location
The Campbell County Historical Society was formed in 1993 to preserve and celebrate the history of Campbell County, Kentucky. As such, the group secured the upstairs of the Alexandria Courthouse and further expanded their space in 2000 to house their research library and the Campbell County Historical Society Museum. On display at the museum are countless newspaper clippings, photographs, books, clothing and other assorted goods that capture Campbell County throughout its many years.
Pearl Bryan Display
The museum also plays host to a rather unusual display focused on the murder of Pearl Bryan in nearby Fort Thomas, Kentucky. The display includes Bryan's own valise (or suitcase) that Bryan carried with her from Indiana to Ohio to visit with her lover, Scott Jackson. It is also the same bag that authorities believed that Jackson and his accomplice, Alonzo Walling, used to carry away her head from the murder scene in Kentucky (see Pearl Bryan's Murder), after which it was never seen again. When the bag was located, the inside was reportedly spattered with bloodstains. It was used as evidence in the trials of Jackson and Walling, which resulted in convictions and executions by hanging.
Also on display is a pair of handcuffs that were used on one of the two men the day they were hung at the Campbell County Courthouse in nearby Newport (see Campbell County Courthouse, KY). Additionally, the museum and historical society also has various photos, books, and newspaper accounts that cover the murder of Pearl Bryan.
Visiting the Location
