Information
Duff Green Mansion
This mansion was built in 1856 by Duff Green for his wife Mary and was known for lavish parties and the Green's hospitality.  When the Civil War made its way to Vicksburg on May 18, 1863, the house came under fire.  After five cannonballs fired by Union troops hit the mansion, the Greens had little choice but to hoist the yellow flag, signaling that the mansion could be used as a hospital.  It quickly started to fill with both Union and Confederate soldiers and the Greens retreated to a cave on the property.

With Union troops on the top floor (in case their allies fired anymore cannonballs) and the Confederate troops on the main floor, the bottom floor kitchen was converted into a makeshift surgery room.  There several amputations took place and the limbs were tossed out the basement window onto a growing pile awaiting burial.  Blood from the soldier's wounds stained the floors throughout the house, which is still visible to date.

The Federal Government leased the house after the fall of Vicksburg on July 4, 1863 and would use it for three more years to give the wounded troops a place to recuperate from their wounds.  The Greens would move back in the home in 1866 and stay there until 1880 with the death of Duff Green.  The mansion would change hands over the years and would serve as an orphanage, retirement home, and the headquarters of the local Salvation Army and a home for transients in need.  It was sold in 1985 and converted into a Bed and Breakfast, which it remains today.

The Ghosts
The Duff Green Mansion is also home to some otherworldly figures as well.  There have been sightings of several different apparitions over time.  Probably one of the more well known is that of a Confederate solider who has been seen in the Dixie Room of the house, which was reportedly a surgery room in the midst of the siege.  The figure is usually seen sitting by the fireplace with one of his legs amputated.  A spirit believed to be that of Mary Green has been seen on occasion as well, as is her daughter who plays with a ball and/or runs up and down the staircase.  Other odd events include a strange smell (sometimes of ether), lights and/or disembodied footsteps walking up and down the halls.
