Perhaps he read too much Poe
When he died on Halloween, 1893, Timothy Clark Smith's fear of burial alive became public. He had left certain provisions that were carried out to the letter, even if they don't entirely make sense. First, his body was placed in an underground crypt in Evergreen Cemetery, the ceiling of which had a large, square hole cut out of it. He was placed directly under this hole. Overhead was constructed a six-foot concrete tube with a very thick square of glass at the top. A window for a corpse. And in Smith's right hand was placed a bell. In case the poor man should awaken in his grave, he could ring his bell and shout up the tube, it was reasoned. But who could ever hear the tinkle of a bell under six feet of earth? And who would be monitoring the dead man's face at all hours of the day and night? The window still exists, probably allowing a dim glow of daylight into space best left unlit. And, hopefully, Timothy Smith Clark never opened his eyes to look up at that distant world above only to wonder 'what do I do now?'
Look for the mound
When entering the small cemetery, Smith's underground crypt is easy to locate, as it lies beneath an unnatural looking mound.
