Information
Fear Fest
This Halloween haunted attraction in Wichita, Kansas got its start in recent years in the nearby city of Goddard. The Halloween haunt is the brainchild of Kale Hamel, the owner of Sophisticated Terror Productions, who got his start around 2000 designing props, animations, lighting displays, and haunts around the nation. Within a few years, Hamel had started his own haunt, leading to the now annual Fear Fest (also known as Midwest Fear Fest) during the Halloween season.

Now located at the Towne West Square mall in Wichita, Fear Fest was built on a 10,000-square-foot lot and resembles more of a theme park than a simple haunted attraction. In addition to the haunt's two signature haunted houses, the haunt features a midway complete with games, a sideshow, and a coffin simulator ride. Work begins on the haunt several weeks before the opening and features Hollywood-style animations and special effects, including costumes designed by the folks at Universal Studios.

The Attractions
In 2009, Fear Fest introduced the two haunted attractions, The 7th Gate (a castle setting, complete with a moat and a raft through a swamp) and Industrial Carnage (an "industrial fear factory" where government experiments have gone very wrong and taken over the facility); as well as two mazes (one a chain-link nightmare) and their standard midway. In 2010, the mazes were gone and the attractions transformed into Morbid Manor (a traditional haunted house) and CarnEvil in 3D (a warped circus complete with clowns and freaks and 3D effects). On the midway, the haunt featured its now signature coffin ride, The Last Ride, where guests experience the simulation of being buried in a coffin; complete with shoveled earth, the smells, and the creatures that await underground. In 2010, the attraction also opened up the CarnEvil Traveling Sideshow for the old time freak show experience.
