Information
Forks, Washington
Forks, Washington is a small rainy city that lays Northwest of Seattle. The city's original livelihood was made off of the timber industry (It was once known as the "Logging Capital of the World"), but since the 1980s has had to rely on local correctional facilities and tourism to bring money into the community. The majority of the tourism comes from fishing and, most recently, from fans of the Twilight series of novels.

Twilight
Twilight is a dark fantasy series written by Stephenie Meyer. The first novel in the series, Twilight, was published on October 5, 2005 and went on to gain a large following of fans. The series centers around the character of Isabella "Bella" Swan, a teenage girl who relocates from her mother's home in Phoenix, Arizona to live with her father in Forks, Washington.

Bella attends the local public high school and becomes curious about a boy named Edward Cullen who appears to go to great lengths to avoid her. It is eventually revealed that Edward and his family are vampires who refuse to drink human blood. Edward initially tries to avoid Bella because the smell of her blood affects him in a way he has never experienced before. He is torn between wanting to be close to her and wanting to devour her. It is a struggle for him to maintain his composure and not feed on her when she is near. In spite of this, a romance blossoms between the two.

The second book in the series, New Moon, brings werewolves into the storyline. It also sows the seeds of an eventual love triangle between mortal, vampire and werewolf that comes to fruition in the third novel, Eclipse. The fourth novel, Breaking Dawn, brings the series to an official end, however at least one spin-off novel was in the works until it was recently put on hold. Most likely the world of Twilight will continue in one form or another.

Twilight Tourism
The popular Twilight novels utilized actual locations in Forks for its fictional tale of the supernatural. This has been embraced by the community and provided Forks with a new tourist industry. Guided tours of Twilight locations are available for visitors through the chamber of commerce. The city's visitor center even has a sign posted stating "Vampires thrive in Forks" and a recreation of Bella's truck in the parking lot at times.

Locations featured in the novels include, Forks High School, Forks Police Station, Forks Outfitters, First Beach, Quillayute Prairie Cemetery, La Push and the Forks Community Hospital. The city's Chamber of Commerce has declared the Miller Tree Inn Bed and Breakfast as the representation of the Cullen family home. They have done likewise with choosing a local home as that of Bella Swan.

The city's mayor, Nedra Reed, declared September 13th to be "Stephenie Meyer Day" in their community as of September 13, 2007. It is the fictional birth date of Twilight's main character Bella. The day has become an annual event. Activities during the 2008 Stephenie Meyer Day included vendors, a look-a-like contest, a tour of the high school, book discussions, a dance and story-telling by a bonfire.

Community businesses have gotten involved with the tourism, offering items that cater to fans. Sully's Burgers has a "Bella Burger" (swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato, pineapple and special sauce) on its menu. The local Subway franchise has a "Twilight Special" submarine sandwich (roasted chicken, ham, bacon and marinara sauce). Pacific Pizza also has their own "Twilight Special" as well ("Bellasagna served with Edbread and Swansalad"). Local businesses Forks Outfitters, Chinook Pharmacy, Shadynook Cottage, Shanny's, Leppell's Flowers & Gifts, J&D Design and the Fern Gallery sell Twilight-related merchandise and books.

Twilight Movie
The movie adaption of Twilight (to be released November 21, 2008) was not filmed in Forks, Washington. It was shot primarily in Portland, Oregon with some scenes filmed in Saint Helens, Oregon as well.

Bigfoot
Forks, Washington lies within Clallam County. The county has had some alleged Bigfoot encounters over the years. Recent encounters include possible Bigfoot prints found 32 miles East of Forks on May 23, 2004 and a man in Forks who claimed to have actually seen the creature near his home in 2005.
