The Goonies (1985): The Walsh House
This private residence in Astoria, Oregon doubled as the home to Mikey (Sean Astin) and Brand Walsh (Josh Brolin) in the 1985 cult-classic film, The Goonies. The film was directed by Richard Donner and written by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg. It is in the attic of this home that the group of teenage friends (self-dubbed The Goonies) find a hidden pirate treasure map that starts their adventure in hopes of saving their town. In the process of navigating the caves filled with booby traps, the gang has to escape from the family of criminals known as the Fratellis that want the treasure for their own.
Directly across from the so-called "Walsh House" is the house that the character of Richard "Data" Wang lives. At one point of the film, Data actually zip lines between the second floors of each house.
The Location Today
Interestingly, the current owner of the house is a big fan of The Goonies and moved to Astoria after seeing the film. When this particular house came on the market, they jumped at the opportunity to purchase it and own their own part of movie history. The house has undergone some slight renovations over the years and received a new paint job, but is still quite recognizable from its big screen appearance.
Since the release of the film, the city has seen a large surge of tourism based around the many locations used in the production. One of the most popular has been this house. At one point, the past owners of the home placed a large sign at the end of their private drive welcoming Goonies fans but warned against driving up the private drive, as well as bothering the residents of either of the two houses. At the time, it related that they could see up to 50 tourists a day at times wanting to get a look at the house.
The sign has since been removed, but fans are still welcome to visit the home, as long as they show common courtesy for the owners of the properties. It is located at the top of a small hill and cars are strictly forbidden from driving up it, though tourists are allowed to walk up the drive as long as they get out of the way of any residential traffic that might make its way up or down the drive. As always, please respect the owner's right to privacy and do not disturb them. |
