The Doyle House
This home played a major role in the 2007 remake of the classic John Carpenter film, Halloween. It located in South Pasadena, California, which is used significantly in both the original version of the film as well as this remake. South Pasadena is actually a common area for film productions, as other nearby homes have doubled in such films as Back to the Future, Liar, Liar, Teen Wolf, Ghost Dad, Beethoven, and more. In the world of the horror genre however, it is most predominately known as the home to Halloween.
Halloween (2007)
The remake of the classic 1978 horror film is less a remake as it is a re-imagining. While the action from the first film is again re-enacted for Rob Zombie's remake of Halloween, it appears much later in the film. Instead, Zombie added an entirely new storyline that explores the character of Michael Myers from the point where he is a ten-year-old boy through his adult years and subsequent escape from Smith Grove's Sanitarium. The new portion actually takes up a little over the first half of the 2007 remake. It then cuts to the action seen in the first film (with a few changes), as Myers hunts his younger sister and her friends.
This particular house doubles as the home of Tommy Doyle (Skyler Gisondo - the character is listed as "Tommy Doyal" in the credits for whatever reason) in the 2007 version of Halloween. It is also the residence where Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton) comes to baby-sit Doyle and later, Lindsey Wallace (Jenny Gregg Stewart) after Laurie's friend Annie Brackett (Danielle Harris) drops her off. After Laurie encounters Myers at the Lindsey's nearby home, she rushes back here and attempts to fend off Myers before being abducted by him and taken to the Myers residence and her former home (see Halloween (2007): The Myers House).
Both the interiors and exteriors were used, although the interiors were limited to only the downstairs portion. The upstairs was reportedly not what the filmmakers were looking for, so they opted to build a pick-up set to represent the upstairs at the Sepulveda Ambulatory Care Center, where a building doubled as Smith's Grove Sanitarium. This type of cross-set use was not uncommon in the making of Halloween. The upstairs of the Myers House was also actually filmed at the residence that doubled as Laurie's home (see Halloween (2007): The Strode House).
In the original 1978 film, Laurie returned to the Doyle house and attempted to fight off Myers, but was ultimately rescued when Doctor Loomis arrived and shot him. In the remake, help arrives in the form of two policemen (Richmond Arquette and Paul Kampf), but their rescue is cut short when Myers quickly dispatches them. Their deaths in the Doyle House meant that a murder occurred in each of the four major houses (Myers, Strode, Wallace, Doyle) in the 2007 version Halloween, whereas only the Myers and Wallace houses featured deaths in the first film.
Another interesting factoid about the production is that the home of Tommy Doyle in the first film is located on Orange Grove Avenue near West Hollywood (see Halloween (1978): The Doyle House) in reality. In the original Carpenter version, locations on Orange Grove were synched up with locations in South Pasadena to represent the fictional Midwest City of Haddonfield, Illinois. For the 2007 remake of Halloween, Zombie chose to keep the various "Haddonfield" homes and schools (exteriors only) all in South Pasadena and in relatively close proximity to one another.
The House Today
It remains to be seen whether this particular residence sees the amount of sightseers that its cousin near West Hollywood gets from Halloween fans. However, it does remain a private residence and it is safe to assume that the owners do not wish to be bothered. Fans interested in seeing the house firsthand need to respect the owner's right to privacy and not trespass on the property. |
