The Strode House
This private residence in South Pasadena, California made appearances in two major films within the first decade of the new century; including a rather ominous role in the 2007 remake of Rob Zombie's Halloween. Before it took a turn in the horror genre however, it appeared in a much different context in the 2005 Disney family/action film, Sky High.
In that film, the house doubled as the residence of the Stronghold family of superheroes: Steve Stronghold/The Commander (Kurt Russell), Josie/Jetstream (Kelly Preston), Will (Michael Angarano), and Layla (Danielle Panabaker). It is featured predominantly throughout Sky High, although it is unclear if only the exteriors were used in the production, as the interior sequences (including the Secret Sanctum) might have been shot elsewhere. Two years later, the house would take a much darker role in the remake of the classic horror film, Halloween.
Halloween (2007)
The first half of the film is actually more of a prequel with the events of the original Halloween only coming into play over 50 minutes into the remake. Written and directed by Rob Zombie, the remake probes further into the childhood of horror icon Michael Myers and his time in Smith's Grove Sanitarium. Much like the original Halloween, Myers returns to the fictional city of Haddonfield, Illinois after he breaks out of the hospital and continues his killing spree - targeting a group of friends that includes his little sister.
This particular residence appeared as the home of the protagonist, Laurie Strode (Scout Taylor-Compton), and her parents Cynthia (Dee Wallace) and Mason (Pat Skipper). While the father was featured in the original Halloween, the mother was simply mentioned though never seen. However, the parents have a lot more screen-time in the Rob Zombie version; including their murders at the hands of Myers (Tyler Mane) on the porch (Mason) and inside (Cynthia) this very house while Laurie is away babysitting (see Halloween (2007): The Doyle House).
Both the exteriors and the interiors of the house were used for Halloween, although only the downstairs portion appeared as the "Strode House" in the film. Interestingly enough, the upstairs of the Myers House was actually shot here, as the second floor of that home was not what the filmmakers were looking for (see Halloween (2007): The Myers House). In another interesting bit of trivia, the shrubbery surrounding two of the trees outside the front of the home were added by the production to disguise the fact that they were palm trees - which does not really match up with the Midwest-setting of the film. Finally, fans of the original 1978 Halloween might recognize this particular street. In the original film, it was on this road that the girls encounter Myers driving past and yell at him, which causes him to slam on the brakes.
While a new home was chosen to fill in as the "Strode House" for the remake of Halloween, the house that appeared in the original does make something of a cameo in the film. During the "high school" sequence when the girls are talking and Laurie notices Myers standing outside on the street watching them, he is actually standing in front of the original Strode House (see Halloween (1978): The Strode House). As the weird world of filmmaking goes, that house is actually located next to the building that doubled as the high school's exteriors (and also where they grabbed that particular point-of-view shot), however the scenes of the girls in the "school" were actually shot elsewhere.
The House Today
Given its roles in both in Sky High and Halloween, the house has two very different audience bases that are curious about its role in those particular films. However, the house remains a private residence and trespassing is strictly forbidden. For those interested in viewing the house from the sidewalk or street, just remember to respect the right to privacy of the owners and avoid loitering. |
