The Vanishing Hitchhiker
There have been various reports of a vanishing or phantom hitchhiker on this section of Highway 365 (old Highway 65) below Little Rock, Arkansas. Most of the sightings involve a young woman dressed in white dress that is torn and bloodied. The driver stops and the girl asks for a ride home, saying she had been involved in an accident. The girl gets in the backseat and the driver proceeds to follow the directions she gave them (usually in Woodson). Once they arrive (sometimes even before), the driver gets out of the car to let the girl out and finds that she has vanished. As is typical with these types of tales, the driver then proceeds to go up to the house she guided them to and knock on the door. There, the man/woman tells them that their daughter died on that very night several years prior.
The Legend
The identity of the girl is traced back to an accident that reportedly took place on the highway in the 1950s in the month of June. Though a name is never supplied, the story goes that a couple were on their way to the prom when their car spun out on the wet highway and plunged off the highway. The boy was killed instantly, while the injured girl was able to crawl back to the highway but died before another car came on the scene. The stories of the phantom hitchhiker reportedly began the year following the accident.
The Sightings
One particular landmark that has been tied to the tale is a bridge somewhere on the highway. It has been reported that several drivers have reported seeing (or picked up) the girl on this bridge. The sightings usually are based around the town of Woodson, but have reported in Hensley and Redfield to the south, and even as far south as Pine Bluff. According to some reports, the number of sightings greatly increase in the month of June when the accident was believed to take place. |
