The Haunted Forest
This Halloween haunted attraction has been a seasonal Vermont tradition since 1980. The Haunted Forest originally got its start began at the Audubon Nature Center in Huntington as a local fundraiser for the organization. After 21 years, the haunt had grown in size and popularity and the organization had a problem keeping up. Now faced with dealing with over 400 volunteers to run the event and over 5,000 people, among other reorganization and strains, the group decided to pull the plug after the 2001 season.
With the threat of a Vermont institution now at severe risk, a group of dedicated volunteers stepped up to the plate and launched their own non-profit organization that could run the haunt. With the group Fun For Change established, the volunteers then set their sites on finding a new location, ultimately settling on the Catamount Outdoor Family Center in Williston. Following their 2002 debut of The Haunted Forest, the group found themselves facing the same strains that faced the Audubon Nature Center and were forced to bring in a full-time employee.
Today, The Haunted Forest is still held at the Catamount Outdoor Family Center thanks to the hard work of the folks at Fun For Change. Over 400 volunteers staff the event and handle everything from pumpkin carving, characters in the haunt, guides, make-up, technical crew, management, to concession duties. In 2007, The Haunted Forest drew over 7,500 visitors (often selling out) making it the largest outdoor theatrical event and most popular Halloween event in the state of Vermont.
The Attraction
Described as an outdoor theatrical event, mysterious guides lead their guests down the one-mile path inside The Haunted Forest. Over 1,000 lighted-pumpkins line the path, which features 11 different vignettes that depict various characters in a wide-variety of creepy scenes, with the darkness of the trail holding a few shocks as well. Around 40 actors are utilized for each performance, with a percentage of the proceeds going back to support the Catamount Outdoor Family Center.
