Information
Indian Beach, Ecola State Park, OR
This beach is notable for its popularity of tourists to the Oregon Coast, but also for its many appearances in Hollywood films over the years. Indian Beach is a crescent-shaped beach that lies inside the Ecola State Park near Cannon Beach, Oregon and the famous Haystack Rock. Aside from offering a view of the infamous "Terrible Tilly" (Tillamook Rock Lighthouse), this stretch of beach is well known for its tide pools, rock formations, and is a popular spot for swimming and surfing. Its scenic value has also not gone unnoticed by Hollywood filmmakers, as witnessed in the number of movies it appears in.

The Goonies (1985)
The beach shows up in a crucial scene in the cult-classic, The Goonies, which was directed by Richard Donner and produced by Steven Spielberg, who also penned the story. In the film, the rocky formations found at the southern tip of the beach are the first piece of the puzzle found in a treasure map the gang had located in a nearby home (see The Goonies (1985): The Walsh House), as the character of Mikey Walsh (Sean Astin) lines up the rocks with the treasure key he found. An additional scene of the boys biking up the road (when Brand Walsh (Josh Brolin) crashes on his little sister's bicycle) was shot near the entrance to Ecola State Park. Despite rumors that the ending of the film was shot at or nearby this beach, those scenes were actually shot at Goat Rock State Park in Sonoma County, California; including the scene of the pirate ship emerging from behind the rocks.

Point Break (1991)
Indian Beach also doubled as the internationally famous Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia in the 1991 Kathryn Bigelow film, Point Break. The rest of this section contains spoilers, so those that do not want to know the ending of the film should skip ahead. In Point Break, Indian Beach comes in at the end when the FBI agent Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) catches up with the infamous ringleader of the Ex-Presidents bank robbers, Bodhi (Patrick Swayze). Even though he has Bodhi cornered, Utah allows him to hit the ocean and attempt to surf the enormous waves being generated by a fifty-year storm, which end presumably in his death.

Twilight (2008)
Most recently, Indian Beach was featured in the film adaptation of the best-selling Stephenie Meyer novel, Twilight. In the film, Indian Beach doubles as First Beach (see First Beach, La Push, WA under Literary Sites), where Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) first learns the truth behind the mysterious character of Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). The production team of Summit Entertainment had originally planned to film at the actual First Beach in La Push, Washington (see La Push, Washington under Literary Sites), but the distance from the filming locations in and around Portland, Oregon turned out to be too far. The decision was made to have relatively nearby Indian Beach to double as First Beach, though in reality it is smaller than the real beach in Washington.

More Information
The area has long been attractive to Hollywood productions and more than likely will continue to be. Other films to have shot in and around Ecola State Park and Indian Beach are Kindergarten Cop (1990), Free Willy (1993), and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III. To get to Indian Beach, enter Ecola State Park from Cannon Beach and simply follow the signs to the beach. The road in was featured in The Goonies and other films as well.
