Madison High School
This high school located in northeast Portland, Oregon has a growing reputation thanks to its appearance in a couple of recent films. The school was officially founded in 1957 and continues to serve an average of 1,200 students annually. Famous alumni of the high school include poet Rochelle Hart and Paul J. De Muniz, who had the distinct honor of being named the first Hispanic Chief Justice in the history of the Oregon Supreme Court. The school is known throughout the state for their speech and debate team, dubbed the "Mad Mouths," as well as their continued prominence in such state sports as baseball and track and field. Madison High School has also received some international exposure due to its recent appearance in two films shot in the Portland-area.
Paranoid Park (2007)
In 2007, Madison High School was featured in director and Portland-native, Gus Van Sant's Paranoid Park. The film was based on a novel by the same name from author Blake Nelson, who also happened to grow up in the Portland-area. It concerns a local skateboarder, named Alex (Gabe Nevins), whose life begins to unravel after he is involved in the accidental death of a security guard. In the film, Madison High School fills in for the school that Alex attends. As he did previously in his 2003 film Elephant, Van Sant decided to cast teenagers from the Portland-area in favor of known Hollywood names to fill the main roles of Paranoid Park; this time doing most of his casting process via MySpace.
Twilight (2008)
Madison High School emerged only a year later in the film adaptation of the bestselling vampire novel, Twilight, by author Stephenie Meyer. Filming for Twilight commenced during Spring Break at the school in 2008, though many of the students spent their vacations working as extras in the film. Scenes that were shot in the school included the biology classroom, some hallway shots, as well as the ever-crucial cafeteria scenes. During the production, the local weather did not cooperate with the filmmakers and the production team was forced to generate the rain seen outside the windows.
The Twilight book and movie are set in the very-real town and surrounding area of Forks, Washington (see Forks, Washington under Literary Sites). However, due to cost factors and special incentives offered by the state, the film was primarily shot in the Portland and Saint Helens area of Oregon. So while it might be located in Portland, Madison High actually filled in as Forks High School (see Twilight Saga: Forks High School under Literary Sites) in the film. However, the scenes were primarily interior-based shots and the majority of exterior scenes were done up north at Kalama High School in Kalama, Washington (see Twilight (2008): Kalama High School). Additional scenes of the school's field trip to a greenhouse were actually filmed at Clackamas Community College in nearby Oregon City (see Twilight (2008): Clackamas Community College).
Madison High Today
The school continues to serve students from the surrounding area and remains an active high school. As such, Madison High School is closed to anyone that is not a student or staff member. |
