Information
History of the Majestic Theatre
Built in 1927, the Majestic Theatre was originally one of three theatres constructed by the Charnin Brothers.  Of the three, which included the Royale and the Theatre Masque (since renamed the John Golden), the Majestic was the larger of the three.  The general idea is that productions could move between venues depending on ticket sales.  Admist the Great Depression, the Charnin Brothers transferred ownership of the three venues over to The Shubert Brothers of the Schubert Organization, who still own the theatre today.  It boasts a seating capacity of 1645 seats, making it one of the largest theatres on Broadway.

Since its inception with Rufus LeMaire's Affairs, the theatre has played host to such popular plays as Carousel, South Pacific, Grease, Camelot, The Music Man, 42nd Street and The Wiz.  However, none have been as popular as the musical that it still hosts to date.

The Phantom of the Opera
After its successful debut at Her Majesty's Theatre (see Her Majesty's Theatre) in London, England, The Phantom of the Opera would make its American debut on January 26, 1988.  The original cast of Michael Crawford (the Phantom), Sarah Brightman (Christine) and Steve Barton (Raoul) all reprised their original roles for the Broadway debut.  The musical, based on the novel The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, has since become the highest grossing entertainment event of all time, amassing over $3.3 billion and an audience of over 80 million people.  It celebrated its 20th anniversary at Her Majesty's Theatre on October 9, 2006 and its 20 years on Broadway on January 26, 2008 with performances 8,318 (matinee) and 8,319 (evening) at the Majestic, marking the first time a Broadway production reached the 20-year mark. Actor George Lee Andrews is the only remaining cast member to have been with the production during that 20-year run.
