Information
The Mausoleum of Mary Chambers Bibb
Located in Maple Hill Cemetery, Mary Chambers Bibb's grave was Huntsville's first mausoleum. Mary Chambers Bibb (1816-1835) was the new daughter-in-law to Governor Thomas Bibb, when she was accidentally poisoned by her nanny mistaking poison for Bibb's medicine. She was buried in her wedding dress, and according to local legend was buried sitting in her favorite rocking chair (thus making a mausoleum necessary). Allegedly, she can still be heard to this day rocking in her tomb.

I have been to this cemetary several times over the years, have some family friends burried there. My first visit was on a field trip when i was in 4th grade. We were studying Alabama history. We learned the stories of many of the people burried there. The one that stood out the most was the one about Mary Bibb. The tour guide told us she would answer your question if you knocked on the door and asked her "Mary, what's wrong?" We were all eagerly awaiting to see if she really would indeed SPEAK and then finally after several LONG minutes of suspence we recieved the answer to the question "Mary, what's wrong?" as she said.......................NOTHING! LOL
