The Manson Murders
The Meyers and Barker ranches both were home to Charles Manson's cult after their murder spree (see The Sharon Tate House). The Barker Ranch was the family's hideout when they were arrested for unrelated charges. The ranches are both located in Death Valley National Park and have long since been abandoned.
The Meyers Ranch burned down in 1999. In 2008, researchers discovered what was thought to be potential graves near the Barker Ranch; however, excavation failed to reveal any human remains. At some point between the dates of May 1 and May 5 of 2009, the Barker Ranch also burned down. The cause of the fire is not known. All that remains of the Barker Ranch is concrete and stone work. Prior to its destruction, the ranch had held a guest book for visitors to sign. The cabinet in which Charles Manson was hiding when discovered by the authorities was a popular item with visitors. The cabinet was lost in the fire along with all other wood fixtures and supports.
The remains of the ranches are only reachable by long, winding dirt roads through the desert. The stone remains of the Barker Ranch may be unstable due to the fire. It is inadvisible to walk inside the ruins, which may eventually be fully demolished due to safety concerns.
