Nightmare: New York City
Although this Halloween haunted attraction located in the heart of New York City, New York has only been in existence since 2004, it has quickly grown to be one of the most critically acclaimed Halloween haunts nationwide. Off-Broadway director Timothy Haskell started the haunt in 2004 by as the Halloween Adventure Haunted House. In 2005, Haskell teamed up with producer Chip Meyrelles to form the production company, Psycho Clan to look at expanding the attraction. The end result was Nightmare: New York's Most Horrifying Haunted House and the upgraded attraction quickly attracted nearly 20,000 visitors.

The group took a different approach in 2006 for their newly themed Nightmare: Face Your Fears and ran houses throughout the city's five boroughs and expanded their audience to close to 35,000. In doing so, they also managed to find a new niche. Prior to the 2006 haunt, the group openly solicited visitors to their Web site to submit their worst fears and they waded through the responses. The end result was 13 rooms dedicated to a variety of fears, such as fear of clowns, fear of water/drowning, claustrophobia, fear of mice and/or rats, and nine more.

Looking to reinvent themselves again in 2007, the group this time surveyed their users for their most frightening paranormal stories. This time, the group received nearly 5,000 responses and, after whittling away the nonsense and jokes from the list, were left with 500 legitimate contenders to choose from. The stories were not directly translated and only served as inspiration for the haunt's rooms, such as the wall of dolls. Rather than running five simultaneous events, they decided to centralize 2007's Nightmare: Ghost Stories to Manhattan and expand the haunt from 13 to 23 rooms and even introduced their horror-filled separate attraction, aptly titled The Maze.

For the 2008 season, the creators decided to finally follow-up on the haunt's namesake and concentrate on actual nightmares. On their Web site, the group asked the simple question, "What is your scariest, most demented nightmare?" Again, Psycho Clan crafted the best responses into an entirely new house of horrors. To compliment both the iconic nightmares of past along with the "most twisted, demented responses," they also expanded the attraction to include more special effects, monsters, and even more elaborate sets.

In addition to the 2008 Nightmares: Bad Dreams Come True walkthrough haunted house, the group also added a second attraction they dub, Nightmare: Legends. This second attraction (included in the admission costs) reintroduced their visitors to the classic monsters of old including zombies, the Blob, vampires, witches, the Frankenstein monster, mummy, and more. In a cross-promotional feature, the haunt even featured an exclusive room dedicated to the new Saw V horror film.

In 2009, the group again swapped their theme - this time to Nightmares: Vampires. The new theme takes place in the Museum of Vampyric Artifacts where vampire antiquities and media from around the world are displayed. When the lights go down, the real vampires come out. The group also featured the "short, sharp, and grotesque black magic show," Nightmare 666, which offered up a whole new spectacle.

In the 2010 season, the haunt became Nightmare: Superstitions and took guests into a "...surreal insane asylum." Once inside, the guests were forced to break common superstitions, only to suffer the consequences later on. In addition, that haunt added a carnival-style event in the asylum named Fun House. There, the inmates ran wild and tormented the visitors as they awaited entry into the main attraction.

Nightmare: Backstage
For the 2007 and 2008 seasons, Psycho Clan also offered the one-night event, Nightmare: Backstage. The event included an after-hours tour of the haunt that goes through the ideas and effects behind the scares, as well as a panel discussion with the minds behind the event. The group also offers demonstrations to give their guests tips on how to design and execute their own home haunts. For more information on this event, please visit their site below.

Nightmare: Miami
Psycho Clan also took the unique approach of expanding their operations in the 2008 city by opening up shop in Miami, Florida. For their first season, the group utilized their 2007 New York City theme and re-created the Nightmare: Ghost Stories attraction with more than a few alterations. The haunt also features two additional attractions and even The Graveyard Bar and Lounge where guests can catch their breath and grab a couple drinks following their visits. It appears this haunt did not resurface for the 2009 season.
