The Old Tolbooth
This marks the spot of the old tolbooth of Edinburgh, a place that legend says the Sawney Beane Clan was brought to shortly before their execution. In reality, the old tolbooth was in a dilapitated state in the 16th century and in no state for prisoners, much less the reported 40 members of the Sawney Beane clan. This fact has been used as evidence that the story behind the Sawney Beane Clan was manufactured and never happened.
The Heart of Midlothian
Today, the old tolbooth is gone after having been demolished in the early Nineteenth century. To mark the spot of the tolbooth, a cobblestone heart was built into the street. It is said that early criminals in Edinburgh used to spit on the tolbooth's front door when it was still standing, out of disdain for the corrupt authority of its time. That tradition is carried on today, with people spitting on the heart, though today it is supposed to bring you good luck.
