Information
Prora, Germany
The vacation resort that Hitler built. This immense structure (six stories high and more than three-miles long) was built by the Nazis from 1936 until construction halted in 1939. It was an attempt by the Nazi's to build morale amongst their people for the war they knew was coming.

The concept was that the Germans would better face war and be more productive if they had a nice place to vacation that was affordable. The result was a complex more akin to a 19th century mental asylum than a vacation resort. Rooms were very small with very little furnishings and the design over-all is institutional in nature with its repetitious design.

The construction project came to a halt when World War II started in 1939. Funds were redirected into the war effort instead. Construction was never resumed. The building has collapsed in some sections since that time, however most of it still stands as a vacant, creepy reminder of the Third Reich. Walking inside the building itself is not advised.

The Prora Documentation Center (located on the property) contains an exhibit about the resort that never was. Visitors can view displays and period film footage in the exhibit. There is also a restaurant.
