The Royal Palm Hotel
The hotel opened its doors in 1913 here as the Hotel Royal Palm and is credited as one of the first to accept African-American guests. The hotel is located in the Chinatown portion of Portland and has housed several businesses such as an Asian grocery store, Japanese steam baths, and laundry facilities over the years. In 1996, the hotel changed over to a transitional housing facility for the city's homeless and mentally ill, which it remains today. In 2003, the Hotel underwent a series of renovations to improve the facility for its guests. It houses over 50 people at any given time and provides medical and mental health care, food, boarding, showers and shelter for its residents.
Frankie Baker
Frankie Baker moved to Portland, Oregon to escape from the notoriety of the murder ballad, Frankie and Johnny. The song was based on a night in October of 1899 in St. Louis, Missouri when Baker shot and killed Allen Britt. After the song became popular, Baker moved all around trying to find someplace where she was not associated with the song, ultimately ending up in Portland. After spending her early days in the city engaged in prostitution, Baker attempted to live a straight life. In 1925, she opened her own shoeshine parlor and later took a job as a chambermaid here at the Royal Palm Hotel. The stay would be fairly short-lived, as she would come down with an illness that left her broke and spending most of her time in her nearby home. |
