Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk
Opened in 1907, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is the oldest amusement park in California. The park features 34 rides, including the Looff Carousel built in 1911. The carousel has a pipe organ that was created in 1894. The Carousel and the park's roller coaster, The Giant Dipper (1924) are both on the National Register of Historic Places. The park also has arcades, midway games, two more full-size roller coasters, restaurants, a concert bandstand and more.
The Lost Boys
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk was used as a shooting location for the 1987 vampire film The Lost Boys. The location served as the boardwalk of the movie's fictional town of Santa Carla. It is here at the boardwalk that Michael and Sam first encounter Star, Laddie, David and the other Lost Boys. The boardwalk's Looff Carousel was used for the opening scene of the film, in which David and his gang get thrown out by a security guard for causing trouble on the ride. The carousel appears later in the film in the background as well.
The Giant Dipper roller coaster can be seen in the background in many boardwalk scenes. The Neptune's Kingdom Miniature Golf, Pool Hall & Arcade is the spot where David challenges Michael to ride with him and the others. The Summer Bandstand is where Michael and Sam attend a concert performance and Michael spots Star and Laddie for the first time in the crowd. Unfortunately the original bandstand was destroyed in the Loma Prieta earthquake of 1989.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
The conclusion of the 1988 horror comedy Killer Klowns from Outer Space was filmed here.
The boardwalk was also used for scenes in the films Sudden Impact (1983), Back to the Beach (1987) The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988) and Dangerous Minds (1995).
Dark Rides & Haunted Attractions
The Boardwalk has 3 dark rides, The Cave Train Adventure, Haunted Castle and Ghostblasters. The Cave Train Adventure has been operating since 1961. It takes riders through a cartoonish neon prehistoric world similar to the one in The Flintstones cartoon series. Ghostblasters is one of Sally Corporations modern dark rides, featuring buggies with laser guns that can be used to shoot targets placed among the spooky stunts and scenes within the simulated haunted house.
The Haunted Castle is a more traditional dark ride with carts on a track winding through animatronic stunts. As of this writing, the park has plans to replace the old Haunted Castle with a new one, featuring multiple levels, taking riders below the boardwalk. The park also features a walk-through haunted attraction called the Fright Walk year round. Like the Haunted Castle, the Fright Walk uses animatronic stunts throughout its maze to provide scares.
The park also hosts Halloween events with additional seasonal haunted attractions featuring actors in costume for the fall months. The Halloween haunts vary in number and theme each year. |
