Sing Sing Prison Museum
Housed in the Caputo Community Center in Ossining, NY, the Sing Sing Prison Museum stands less than half a mile from the infamous Sing Sing prison. The prison has such a reputation that it spawned both the phrases "Sent up the river" (a reference to the Hudson River) and "The Big House". The museum houses photos, items from the prison and replicas of items such as Sing Sing's first electric chair (used to execute many convicts, including cannibal killer Albert Fish and Ethel and Julius Rosenberg).
Visitors to the museum can expect to witness for themselves the creativity of Sing Sing's prisoners in creating shanks and other makeshift weapons from normally harmless objects. Two prison cells from Sing Sing are on display as well; allowing visitors to step inside one and get a view of prison life. Photos display life in the prison for both those who were incarcerated there as well as those who are merely employed at the prison. Photos also display former abusive practices used by the guards at the prison.
The prison itself is still active and houses more than 1,700 prisoners currently. Despite this, there have been plans to relocate the museum to the prison itself for years.
