The O.J. Simpson Murder Trial
At 10 pm on June 12, 1994, Nicole Brown Simpson's Akita dog, Kato, began barking wildly and attracted the attention of a neighbor after an hour of barking. The neighbor brought the dog home and discovered blood on its fur. The dog then led him back to Nicole Brown Simpson's home and the discovery of a murder scene that would lead to the most infamous American double murder trial resulting in acquittal since the Lizzie Borden trial nearly 102 years earlier.
Shortly after midnight on June 13, the police arrived on scene at 875 South Bundy in Brentwood, California. They discovered the mutilated bodies of Nicole Brown Simpson and friend Ronald Goldman. Nicole, the ex-wife of retired NFL Football Player and actor O.J. Simpson had been bludgeoned in the back of her head, stabbed four times in the chest and had been nearly decapitated from a deep slice to her throat. Her corpse also showed defense wounds from where she attempted to fend off her attacker's knife. Ron Goldman, a waiter and friend of Nicole's, had multiple stab and slash wounds.
Evidence at the scene suggested to police that O.J. Simpson was the murderer. Within days, O.J.'s lawyers had arranged for him to turn himself in to police. Instead of turning himself in, O.J. led police on a slow car chase that was televised live across the nation. He finally did turn himself over to police and Simpson pleaded not guilty to the murders. The resulting trial was televised and became a public spectacle. Ultimately, despite DNA evidence linking him to the crime scene, the jury acquitted O.J. Simpson on October 3, 1995. A later civil trial would find find him liable for the deaths and the families of the victims were able to sue him for 33 million dollars in damages. Largely, the families were unable to collect any money from Simpson though.
On October 3, 2008, a jury in Las Vegas, Nevada would find Simpson guilty in 12 counts that included robbery, assault, conspiracy to commit a crime, kidnapping with a deadly weapon for a crime that took place at the Palace Station Hotel & Casino. In a strange coincidence, the jury delivered their verdict 13 years to the day of his Los Angeles acquittal after deliberating for 13 hours for the crime that was committed on September 13, 2007. |
