Tommy Johnson
Blues legend, Tommy Johnson, grew up in Crystal Springs, Mississippi and ultimately died here as well. His tale has become somewhat intertwined with that of Robert "King of the Delta Blues" Johnson (no relation). Both are said to have made a deal with the devil at a crossroads late one night to acquire their skills. While Robert Johnson never was known to make that claim, it is said that Tommy Johnson did. Or rather, his brother said he did. At any rate, Tommy Johnson was buried in Crystal Springs in an unmarked grave at the Warm Springs Methodist Church Cemetery. In 2001, The Mount Zion Memorial Fund and descendants of Johnson unveiled a new headstone for his grave. However, the land the cemetery is part of has since fallen into private hands and the family has been repeatedly been denied access to place the headstone at the grave. In the meantime, the headstone has been on public display here at the Crystal Springs Library.
