Information
Twilight (2008): Bloated Toad
This privately owned location in Saint Helens, Oregon was one of the many locations used in the production of the 2008 vampire film, Twilight. The movie is an adaptation of the 2005 novel of the same name by author Stephenie Meyer that became an instant bestseller and was spawned off into a series of novels. Though the book was originally set in the city of Forks, Washington and incorporated the nearby cities of Port Angeles and La Push (see Forks, Washington and La Push, Washington under Literary Sites), the adaptation was filmed primarily in the cities of Portland and Saint Helens in Oregon due to budgetary constraints.

In Twilight, the business was transformed into the restaurant called the Bloated Toad. It is this Italian restaurant where the characters of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) have their first date, following Edward's rescue of Bella from muggers. In the original book, Meyer utilizes the very-real Bella Italia (though called La Bella Italia - see Twilight Saga: Bella Italia under Literary Sites) restaurant in the city of Port Angeles as the site of the first date, but the restaurant was renamed in the movie - probably due to naming rights concerns.

Production of Twilight took place here and throughout the city of Saint Helens during the first couple of weeks in early-April 2008. Locations included the Bloated Toad, the dress shop (see Twilight (2008): Petite Jolie), the bookstore (see Twilight (2008): Thunderbird and Whale), and a residence that doubled as the home to Bella and her father Charlie (see Twilight (2008): The Swan House), and more. In the case of the Bloated Toad, both the interiors and exteriors of the building were transformed for the restaurant scene.

The Location
The "restaurant" is actually the home of a local consulting business that does not offer special Mushroom Ravioli meals. It is a running business that still serves its patrons to this day. The business has been known to take part in certain fan-based tours that travel through the area but unless you are member of such a tour, it is probably best to limit your visit to outside the building. As always, please respect the company and their customers.
