Twilight (2008): The Swan House
This private residence in Saint Helens, Oregon served as the home of the main character, Bella Swan, in the 2008 vampire film, Twilight. The movie is based off the 2005 bestselling novel of the same name by author Stephenie Meyer. It turned out to be the first book in a multiple-book series that became a smash-hit, selling over 17 million copies worldwide in 37 different countries.
In the Twilight saga, the character of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) moves to Forks, Washington (see Forks, Washington under Literary Sites) to live with her father (see Twilight Saga: The Swan House under Literary Sites), Charlie Swan (Billy Burke), the city's Chief of Police. In Forks, she meets and falls in love with a fellow student by the name of Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), who just happens to be a vampire.
Initial plans had called for the filming to take place around the actual locations depicted in the novels, but the filmmakers opted to film it instead primarily in the Oregon cities of Portland, Saint Helens, and Oregon City due to certain financial incentives offered by the state. As a result, the locations around Saint Helens used in the production of Twilight were a combination of various scenes from the Washington cities of Forks (the Swan House) and Port Angeles (see Twilight (2008): Petite Jolie, Twilight (2008): Thunderbird and Whale, and Twilight (2008): Bloated Toad - all renamed for the movie) from the novel. The home that doubled as the Forks residence of the Cullen family is located in the Forest Park-area of Portland (see Twilight (2008): The Cullen House).
Production on Twilight began in early-April 2008 in various locations around Saint Helens with the majority of filming taking place at this location, which was dubbed "Charlie's House." At the time of production the local newspaper, The South County Spotlight, spoke with the film's publicist Peter J. Silbermann who had this to say about their choice to represent the home of the Swans, "It's just beautiful, it's very appropriate for the film."
The House Today
The house is an occupied private residence. The road is a dead end with no turn around. Fans should park at the city owned free parking in Olde Towne and be prepared for a short walk. Entrance to the lot is across from the Columbia Theatre on 1st Street. And two murals applied for the movie are visible from this parking lot. Respect local residents. Do not enter private driveways or yards. Appreciate this jewel from the street.
