Twilight: The Complete Illustrated Movie Companion
By Mark Cotta Vaz

Get a behind-the-scenes look at the filming of Twilight. The book contains interviews, exclusive stories, and yes - even information about the filming locations used for the film adaptation of the first novel in the bestselling series by Stephenie Meyer.

Information
Twilight (2008): Thunderbird and Whale
This commercially owned building in Saint Helens, Oregon was one of several locations in the city to make an appearance in the 2008 dark fantasy/vampire film, Twilight. The movie was an adaptation of the first book of a series of popular bestselling novels by author Stephenie Meyer that have since grown a tremendous following. Interestingly, the book took place in the very real Washington cities of Forks, La Push, and Port Angeles (see Forks, Washington and La Push, Washington under Literary Sites), but for budgetary concerns, the filmmakers chose to shoot the majority of the movie throughout locations in northern Oregon.

In reality, this particular building serves as an office building but it took on a separate identity during the production. In Twilight, it was transformed into the Thunderbird and Whale bookstore in Port Angeles. It was here that the main character of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) stops and purchases a book on the history and folklore of the Quileute tribe of the Pacific Northwest, after earlier finding the store on the Internet. The segment is actually a deviation from the original story. In the novel, Bella actually bypasses the bookstore, which many fans identify as the very real Port Angeles store, Port Book and News (see Twilight Saga: Port Book and News under Literary Sites), due to its close proximity to other locations that appeared in the novel.

Production of Twilight descended upon Saint Helens during the early days of April 2008. Filming at this particular locale took place late one night around April 16 by most accounts. While the exteriors were most definitely used in the production, it is unclear whether the interior sequence was also filmed here, though more than likely that was the case. As seen in the movie, the building is located directly next to the alleyway and parking lot (see Twilight (2008): The Port Angeles Alley) where Bella is subsequently surrounded by local thugs before Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) comes to her rescue. While Saint Helens primarily doubled as Port Angeles in the movie (including this location, the dress shop (see Twilight (2008): Petite Jolie), and restaurant (see Twilight (2008): Bloated Toad)), the residence of Bella and Charlie Swan (Billy Burke) (see Twilight (2008): The Swan House) is only a few blocks away, though in the film it was located in the city of Forks. Meanwhile, the Forks residence that house the Cullen family coven of vampires is located in nearby Portland (see Twilight (2008): The Cullen House).

The Location
Both the bookstore and the Web site were created solely for the film and do not exist. In reality, the building serves as the office of a local attorney as it was prior to the production of Twilight. It continues to serve patrons to this day, so any visit to the building should be limited to simply viewing the property from the nearby public road (or alley). As always, visitors are expected to respect the company and their customers.
