Forks Community Hospital
The Forks Community Hospital opened on November 5, 1952. It was originally called the Olympic Clinic and only had one doctor (Dr. Edwin F. Leibold) to serve the community. At times the doctor's work took him out into the field and away from the hospital to perform jobs that would be handled by paramedics and rescue workers today. An ambulance service was added in the 1950s and the name of the hospital was changed to its current one in 1959. The hospital has been expanded in size multiple times over the years.
Twilight
In the Twilight Saga novels by Stephenie Meyer, the character of Carlisle Cullen works at the hospital in Forks (see Forks, Washington) as a doctor. In the novels, Calisle is also a vampire who is nearing 400 years of age. The son of an Anglican Minister in London, England, Carlisle helps his father and other pastors hunt and kill suspected witches, vampires and werewolves. Their victims all to often are actually human. Carlisle falls prey to an actual vampire and becomes one himself.
Vowing not to take human victims, Carlisle lives off of the blood of animals for centuries. He changes his vocation to that of a doctor in order to help others. He eventually forms an adopted family by creating a coven of vampires who take his last name as their own.
Bella Swan also spends some time in the hospital in Twilight, after a classmate loses control over his vehicle and almost runs her over. Edward Cullen saves her from being crushed to death, which causes Bella to question his seemingly superhuman speed and strength.
Tours
The Forks Chamber of Commerce offers a tour of local places (see Forks Chamber of Commerce Twilight Tours) featured in the Twilight novels. The hospital is included as a stop along the way.
The hospital even plays along. They have a parking spot saved for Dr. Carlisle Cullen's Mercedes. |
