The View Point Inn This historic inn in Corbett, Oregon is already well known for its spectacular view of the Columbia River Gorge, but is sure to gain further recognition for its appearance in the 2008 vampire film, Twilight, as well as for its stories of ghostly activity. The facility dates back to June 4, 1925 when it officially opened under the name of The Palmer House. It was the creation of the Grace H. Palmer Corporation and designed by renowned Portland architect Carl Linde. Palmer purchased the property from a family of Danish immigrants in hope of transforming the spot into a first-class Tudor Arts and Crafts Style "tea house" and "resort". Her dream would only last for two years however, when in 1927 her company filed for bankruptcy and she was forced to sell the facility. When it was being liquidated, famed-head chef of Portland's Benson Hotel, William Moessner, stepped forward and purchased the property. In conjunction with his wife Clara, he rechristened it the View Point Hotel and reopened it to the public. His venture was highly successful and attracted such notable personalities as President Franklin D. Roosevelt and actor Charlie Chaplin, who stayed at the facility. Despite its successes, the facility hit a rough patch in the 1960s when a nearby interstate highway was built that detoured traffic and tourism away from the area. Instead of conceding defeat, Moessner continued to keep the facility in immaculate shape and ready for business. For several years, the hotel resembled a "ghost hotel" that sat with tables set as if business was still booming. There is no clear record of when Moessner saw his last patron, but his efforts finally came to an end when he passed away on September 11, 1979. In 1982, Doug and Karen Watson purchased the property in hopes of turning it into their home. It was during this time that the building received the distinct honor of being placed on the National Register of Historic Places. It received this distinction in 1985, which is further enhanced by being the only property out of four in the National Scenic Area to not be owned and maintained by the government. However, the Watsons finally decided to move on and put the property back up for sale in 1997. From a very young age, Geoff Thompson had dreamed of owning the historic landmark that overlooked the Columbia River Gorge. After proving his mettle in running a highly successful restaurant and bed and breakfast, Thompson set out to duplicate his success at the View Point Inn. However, there were hurdles along the way. In 1998, the Forest Service purchased the land that surrounded the inn and moved forward on plans to create a new state park that incorporated the nearby Vista House and wanted to include the inn. Thompson fought back and ultimately succeeded in getting an amendment to a Federal Act in order to save the property. On December 23, 2006, his efforts were further rewarded when officials from Multnomah County officially approved of his plans to re-establish the hotel and restaurant. The official opening came on Memorial Day 2007 when the View Point Inn reopened and began to serve patrons once more. However, there is still work to be done. With co-owner Angelo Simione, Thompson is solely focused on completely preserving and restoring the facility, both in terms of function and architecture. While abiding by the rules set forth of industry standards in terms of historic properties, the duo is continuously raising money for repair and maintenance of the inn. Though the historical importance of the building is a plus, Thompson and Simione might be further aided by the appearance of the facility in the 2008 film, Twilight. The movie is based on the first novel in a series that have become a worldwide phenomenon and has an established base of countless loyal fans (see below). And if the historical or its Twilight-connection were not, the inn might also have something else to offer its guests. Since its reopening, the facility has become rich with stories of ghosts and paranormal activity. The Ghosts of the View Point Inn Shortly after purchasing the building, Thompson realized that he and the inn had a fairly odd connection. In earlier years, Thompson had been drawn to and lived in the Sovereign Apartments (the former-Sovereign Hotel) in downtown Portland. When researching his new purchase of the View Point Inn, he stumbled across an unusual coincidence. Both the Sovereign Apartments and the View Point Inn had been designed by Portland architect Carl Linde and both had somehow seemed to draw him in. Today, Thompson wonders if his connections to both of the buildings might be more than the average coincidence. The seemingly odd serendipity was not the end of it. It would not be long before construction workers and staff alike reported strange activity inside the building. According to the staff, the inn is home to not one but two different ghosts that may account for some the odd occurrences. According to the accounts, the presence of an elderly gentleman they dubbed "Bob" is often accompanied by the distinct smell of cigar smoke that suddenly appears from nowhere. The other presence is described as an elderly lady with grey hair that is done up in a bun who is dressed in turn-of-the-century clothing. The apparition has been spotted on occasion both inside and outside the building (near the chicken coop) and bares a slight resemblance to a portrait of the original owner, Grace Palmer, which is hanging in the upstairs hallway. Among the activity reported is the sound of footsteps when no one is supposed to be in the building, doors that open and close themselves on their own, lights that turn on and off, and even the possible presence of a dog, though none are on the property. In the inn's luxurious Roosevelt Suite (so-named because President Roosevelt stayed in this very room), closet doors have suddenly slammed shut on staff members and lights have been known to turn themselves on. In the Chanticleer Room, the drapes have been known to suddenly open or come off its supports. Finally, in an unnerving tale, a staff member reported walking up the stairs to the top floors when they suddenly had the overwhelming feeling that someone was with them. They came to a complete stop when all of sudden they heard the sounds of a child giggling coming from the Inn Keeper's Room behind them. Twilight (2008) Perhaps with its haunting tales, the View Point Inn was an ideal location for the 2008 vampire film Twilight. The movie is an adaptation of the 2005 bestselling novel of the same name by author Stephenie Meyer, which was an immediate success, spawning into a series of novels and establishing a massive base of millions of dedicated fans. Though the actual book is set around the area of Forks, Washington (see Forks, Washington under Literary Sites), the film was primarily shot in northern Oregon around the greater Portland-area. In the movie, the View Point Inn plays host the Forks High School prom, attended by the main character of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and her vampire lover Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). In the book, the prom actually takes place at the high school (see Twilight Saga: Forks High School under Literary Sites), but the amazing scenery of the inn was simply too good for the filmmakers to pass it up. Filming commenced in April of 2008 and sets were constructed for the prom sequence, which employed a "Monte Carlo" casino-type theme. Scenes from Twilight primarily take place in the yard outside the inn overlooking the gorge, but also include scenes in the dining room area. Additionally, a scene was shot in the inn's Roosevelt Suite that marks the final scene in the movie and a deviation from the ending of the novel. The owners and staff of the View Point Inn have completely embraced their Twilight-connection and its critical role in played in the movie. As a result, the View Point Inn has already held various special events around the Twilight-theme, as well as openly requested the assistance of the fans to help save and restore the historic property. Twilight Events In October 2008, the View Point Inn played host to a special Twilight Slumber Party Event where fans stayed overnight and were treated to a Twilight-themed breakfast and their very own brick on the Twilight Walk of Fame (see below). The event was followed-up by three-night Twilight Halloween event. In anticipation of the movie's release, the scenes of the movie were recreated using real sets from the production for a two-night celebration of the film on November 20th and 21st (the release date) in 2008. The inn is also soliciting ideas for other future events from fans of the series. For more information, please visit their site below. Twilight Walk of Fame The inn is also soliciting the assistance of Twilight fans for their help in saving the historic site and its prominent role in the film's history. The inn has started the "Twilight Walk of Fame" brick pathway to reach their goals. Fans can purchase their own personal brick so their name will forever be connected to the series, which will help raise funds to replace the roof and repair the chimney, as well as receive a few goodies for their trouble.
