The Whaley House
Thomas Whaley first built this house in 1857 by as a home for his family. Since its construction it has also been used as San Diego's first commercial theater, the county courthouse, and a general store. It was dedicated as a historic museum in the 1960s, which it has remained open to the public to this day. Over the years many paranormal shows and investigators have deemed it as the most haunted house in the United States. The ghosts that are said to haunt the house include:
James Robinson
Also known as Yankee Jim, he was convicted and sentenced to death by hanging in 1852 for attempted grand larceny. The makeshift gallows were constructed on the site where the house now stands. Thomas Whaley was a witness to the execution, but it did not deter him from purchasing the land for his family later on. After the Whaley family was all settled into their home, they immediately began to experience the sound of heavy footsteps about the house. Whaley's youngest daughter Lillian Whaley who lived in the house until 1953 was convinced that Yankee Jim was in fact the ghostly presence in the house.
Thomas Whaley
Even though Thomas Whaley moved out of the home in 1985 many visitors have spotted his ghostly vision on the upper landing. He has been spotted by children as well and appears to be very friendly towards them.
Anna Whaley
Mrs. Whaley can usually be seen in the downstairs rooms or garden area, and has even appeared to TV host Regis Philbin.
Courtroom Lady
A mysterious woman has reportedly been seen by many in the courtroom, dressed in a long skirt, gold earrings, and a hat. Her description does not match any historical records of the Whaley's, but it could be that she was a long ago tenant from when the house had been rented out over the years.
Whaley Playmate
Several guests have reported seeing the vision of a young girl, usually in the dining room. The legend is that she is the playmate of one of the Whaley children, possibly named Annabel or Carrie Washburn, who broke her neck on a clothes line while running down a hill on the property. There has been no historical documentation to back this story up.
Even a ghostly dog has been spotted running through the house that possibly resembles a dog once owned by the Whaley's named Dolly Varden - a terrier breed. |
