An Egyptian Mummy in Vermont
Everyone knows a pack rat, but there were few the likes of Middlebury's Henry Sheldon (1821-1907). In addition to being Town Clerk, Henry also collected all sorts of strange stuff, from stuffed cats to Calvin Coolidge's baby shoes. He opened a museum in Middlebury to display his collections which exists today, although his collection now makes up a very small part of the so-called Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History. Perhaps Sheldon's most unique item never went on display, however, but lies buried out in the cemetery on Route 30, on the outskirts of town. That item, which Sheldon purchased back in the 1800's, is the mummy of a two-year-old Egyptian boy, the son of a king. Upon arrival, the mummy's condition was so poor that Sheldon stowed it away in his attic, until it was rediscovered by George Mead, the president of the museum's board of directors in 1945. Mead thought it unthinkable that the remains of a human being, no matter how old or shabby, should be stored away under such circumstances. He paid to have the remains cremated and buried in his own family cemetery plot. He even erected a tombstone with the death date given as 1883 BC. The stone also features an ankh, a small bird and a Christian cross.
