Haunted Overload
This Halloween haunted attraction is located in Lee, New Hampshire has been often cited as being one of the most elaborate and creative of haunts around the United States. Haunted Overload is the creation of graphic artist, Eric Lowther, who started designing his own little Halloween haunt off-and-on from the age of 12 years old. In 1999, Lowther started decorating his front lawn at his residence in Exeter, New Hampshire for the trick-or-treaters that passed through. What started as a simple display started to grow exponentially each consecutive year and Haunted Overload was born.
Within a short time, Lowther's elaborate designs and sets had begun to take over his lawn during the Halloween season. Understanding and supportive neighbors, along with family and friends, started to pitch in to help with the construction and assisted in scaring some of the unknowing guests that passed through. Before long, Lowther had to apply for a permit to shut down the street because the amount of vehicular traffic was making it unsafe for the pedestrians. Soon enough, lines stretched two blocks in order to see Haunted Overload and Lowther estimated around 5,000 people visited it in 2006, following being rated as one of the top 13 haunts in the nation by Hauntworld.com. Aside from his lawn being completely destroyed by Halloween, he had run out of room to further expand his creation. Fortunately, Lowther then met up with John and Carol Hutton of Coppal House Farm.
The Huttons work the 78-acre farm in nearby Lee and decided to construct a maze for the Halloween season in 2005. It turned out to be an instant success, but their visitors constantly asked the couple when they were going to have a haunted maze. The couple was reportedly aware of Lowther's Haunted Overload and impressed with his approach for creating spooky imagery with less reliance on the gore, and decided to meet up. It turned out to be a perfect match.
In 2010, the haunt again relocated - this time to the DeMeritt Hill Farm, which consists of 120 acres of hills, orchards, hiking trails, ponds and picnic areas. Even better, Haunted Overload advertises the location as, "deep in the woods."
The Attraction
Haunted Overload celebrated its first year at DeMeritt Hill Farm in 2010 and Lowther continued to grow and expand his haunted attraction. All of the elaborate props and sets are based on tradition Halloween symbols (pumpkins, witches, ghosts, jack o' lanterns, etc.) and are designed and created by Lowther and family and friends still aid in the construction. They feature everything from the finely detailed, yet towering (some as high as 35-feet) pumpkin men, ghosts, the grim reaper, and witches to over 150-lighted pumpkins. The haunt utilizes confined spaces, strobe lights, and the dark, along with his monstrous constructions and props, to provide the backdrop for the actors to have some fun. Haunted Overload is redesigned each year, so there is always something new for returning guests.
