Information
Jack the Ripper?
Dr. Francis Tumuelty, a suspect in the Jack the Ripper murders, lies buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester, NY. Tumuelty was known for his shady medical practices, con jobs, perverse behavior and hatred of women. The doctor was in Whitechapel at the time of the Ripper murders. He had motive and anatomical knowledge, as well as a collection of female sex organs preserved in jars.

In a bizarre bit of irony Tumuelty was also mistaken for a conspirator in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and arrested. He was released when it was discovered the authorities had mistaken him for another man. It is strange to think that Jack the Ripper could possibly have been prevented from commiting his infamous murders if he had been wrongly imprisoned for another historical murder.

The only confirmed victim of the "doctor", whose medical degree is highly questionable, is a Canadian who died from one of Tumuelty's procedures. Tumuelty fled Canada back to his hometown of Rochester to escape the charges.

He similarly fled England after being arrested for a misdemeanor charge. The Ripper murders ceased immediately upon him fleeing the country. English authorities were unable to extradite him once he'd returned to America.

Appropriately enough Tumuelty is buried in lot 13 in the old cemetery section, East of Lake Road.

Rattlesnake Pete
Besides Tumuelty, Peter "Rattlesnake Pete" Gruber is also among the people of historical note interred in the cemetery. Rattlesnake Pete was an eccentric known for his large collection of rattlesnakes, which he used to "cure" goiters. He also maintained a strange collection in his "museum" which he maintained in Rochester. Items in the museum included a petrified corpse, a pipe belonging to John Wilkes Booth and the first electric chair. Pete also invented the nickolodean piano.

I heard tha Jack the Ripper was buried in this cemetery, but I still have yet to find the grave.

I know that on the dewey side of Holy Sepulchre, there is a monument that was carved to be a woman, but it does not look like the average woman with long robes and such. She is a woman with short hair and a nice dress. Buried there is a man named Joseph, and his wife was not buried beside him. Maybe the statue of the woman was suppose to be his wife????
