Cemetery Stories: Haunted Graveyards, Embalming Secrets, and the Life of a Corpse After Death |
Book |
0/0 |

| By Katherine Ramsland |
|
Overview by TheCabinet: This book is not so much a travel guide as it is interesting and sometimes disturbing stories about cemeteries, the life of a corpse, and the business of death. Topics covered include everything from autopsy, society traditions, funeral directors, and morticians to more scandalous accounts of graverobbing, ghosts, necrophilia, or ritual abuse. Locations include The Body Farm, Knoxville, TN, Body Worlds, The Museum of Death, as well actual cemeteries like Old Westminster Burial Ground. The stories of life in the "death" business can sometimes include rather short snippets or cross over to the very disturbing and grotesque without much warning. Since it is more interested in telling the stories, there are no indexes pointing to the locations mentioned and the chapters are more about general themes than what stops might be included. In order to read about a particular locale in the book, the reader is forced to thumb through page by page until they find it and more research is required if they plan on visiting a location mentioned inside. However, it is a fascinating take on the lesser-known aspects of the industry and the sometimes gruesome practices required for bodies to be preserved just for funeral services.

Cinema Salem - A Cinematic Guide to the Witch City |

| By Peter Mac |
|
Overview by Tom G: This is Peter Mac's compendium of movies and television shows that were either set in or actually filmed on location in Salem, Massachusetts. It provides a synopsis of each film or TV show along with information on the production and reactions from the local Salem community. Sometimes the book provides exact addresses for shooting locations, but at other times only provides general details on location. Further research on the part of the reader will be needed to nail down some specific locations. At 348 pages, the book provides a good deal of information as well as detailed plot synopsis. The book is very readable despite a huge number of misspellings. The movies covered range from the silent era through modern day. The book also has a small section dealing specifically with Salem tourism. Locations discussed in the book include The House of Seven Gables, The Hawthorne Hotel and Lappin Park.

City Ghosts: True Tales of Hauntings in America's Cities |
Book |
0/0 |

| By Mary Beth Sammons, Robert Edwards |
|
Overview by TheCabinet: This particular book has carved out something of a unique niche. It focuses completely on reputedly haunted locations in the major metropolitan cities of the United States and bypasses the more rural tales. Even better, in addition to the ghost stories of the over 30 cities, it even includes information on the local ghost tours and walks in each city if available (and it typically is). Locations include such stops as The Seelbach Hilton, Ford's Theatre National Historical Site, and the Tennessee State Capitol. The chapters are broken up by region and city and a helpful index breaks down each location in a given city - making it quick and easy to find what you are looking for. In addition to a quick write-up on the history and reports of paranormal activity, the addresses, phone numbers, Web sites, and/or e-mail address of each location are included for easy reference. The write-ups can be short, so more research may be required, but overall the book is an excellent guide to reported haunted hot spots of the major cities of the United States.

Civil War Ghost Stories |
Book |
4/1 |
| By Angus Konstam |
|
Overview by TheCabinet: This is one of the better books that tackles the American Civil War, as well as the modern tales of ghosts or paranormal activity that has reportedly been left behind from the conflict. Author Angus Konstam not only provides some rich historical perspective on the war and how the conflict might have left a lasting impression on a given location, but also provides full-page photographs and pictures from the war itself, as well as the locations in modern times. Some of the varying locations that are included are the Cashtown Inn near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the Carnton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee, and even the Vicksburg National Military Park. The sheer scope of information provided makes this book more than worth the effort, which is only complemented by the care that went into its layout and presentation. Whether you are a Civil War or paranormal buff, this book is definitely an excellent addition to any collection.

Civil War Ghost Stories and Legends |
Book |
3/1 |
| By Nancy Roberts |
|
Overview by TheCabinet: The title of this book gives you a good idea about what you are in store for. Author Nancy Roberts has compiled 18 locations associated with the American Civil War that are reportedly still haunted by their role in the conflict. Among the locations covered range from the McRaven House in Vicksburg, Mississippi to the infamous Andersonville National Historic Site. Those looking for the location's historical role in the conflict should probably look elsewhere. The focus of this book is on the lingering effects left behind by the role the location played, although each chapter starts with a painfully short recap of the general area during the war. As for the legends, the accounts of the paranormal are told in dramatic recreations that takes creative license with the tales. While not a big fan of this approach, Roberts manages to make the stories interesting and poignant. If only she had included more about the war, which is often more horrifying than any ghost story.
