Monster Spotter's Guide to North America Book
4/1
No Comments
By Scott Francis
Overview by TheCabinet: This book is best described as a quick reference field guide to cryptids throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Each entry is rather light on details or historical reflection, but the amount of mysterious creatures listed is quite impressive. It takes a tongue-in-cheek approach at times with cartoon-like drawings, but is an excellent introduction to the sometimes-forgotten stories and mythology of various areas. The locations covered include Scape Ore Swamp (and the Lizard Man), Lake Erie (and tales of Bessie), Leeds Point, New Jersey (home of the Jersey Devil), and countless more. It sometimes favors legend over truth, but makes up for it with the sheer volume of critters covered. The guide to locations associated with the monsters can range from the very specific (like Boggy Creek, Arkansas) to the far more general, such as a particular state where a monster might have been sighted. Given the fast-facts approach and sometimes vague area descriptions, the entries typically cry out for more research before packing your bags and going to seek out one of the cryptids inside.
