I have always been curious but too lazy to look it up - Was Herbert's The Dark turned into that odd 70s horror flick where the creature shoots lasers out of eyes?

Herbert's great novel, Haunted was turned into a movie several years back. It starred Kate Beckinsale and Aidan Quinn. They actually did a very good job on staying with the book. There was a lot cut out but the jist of the story is there.
